    The message of the cross

Gal 6:14 But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

1 Cor 2:2 For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

I can picture Paul and Apollos discussing what to teach the Corinthians.

Apollos : I want to talk about Jesus' return and final judgment because it is based on his finished work on the cross.

Paul : No way, that belongs to the future. You may mention it once and then concentrate on Jesus crucified and nothing else.

Apollos : At least I should be allowed to talk about Pentecost and the power issued to the Church since that is the last thing that Jesus established before the Church got properly started.

Paul : Same answer. Mention it once then concentrate on Jesus and him crucified.

Apollos : What about the resurrection ? Without the resurrection noone can die with Jesus and be resurrected and thereby be born again and there is no salvation at all ?

Paul : Same answer. One sentence then back to concentrating on Jesus and him crucified.

Apollos : And Jesus' death ? If he had hung on the cross, shed his blood then miraculously been pulled off the cross and healed by the power of God rather than resurrected then that would have mattered nothing. Death is what a proper crucifixion produces.

Paul : Nope. Jesus and him crucified.

Apollos : By now we've removed most of the actual gospel !

We could of course discuss whether "Jesus suffered in hell" is part of the whole thing but it has little to do with the fact that that hypothetically occurred after he said "it is finished" and died. There is no atonement without his death and resurrection, whatever happened or did not happen during that time.

Are you saying that Apollos was right that Paul had removed most of the gospel

No, I'm saying that it doesn't mean what my scenario describes. I posted a bit short, something happened while I was typing.

The message of the cross has a prelude starting with creation and an ending with final judgment and the new heaven and Earth. It is best to concentrate on that which is more strongly connected to it rather than to get occupied with endless genealogies etc, that is why Paul got tough on the Corinthians and wanted them to focus very clearly on that which belongs to the cross.
