100 Years Ago for the first week of December 1920 from the pages of the Greeley Tribune-Republican newspaper:


Roland Newland was fined $10 and court costs after he was caught going into two restaurants while he was drunk and he caused disturbances. Police gave the judge a good word for Newland, saying he had a good reputation and was supporting his widowed mother. Therefore, he was given the minimum fine.

The Greeley Teachers' Exams will be held next week at the courthouse in Greeley. All teachers must pass the state test to receive a teaching certificate.

Three Greeley teenagers who were convicted of burglarizing a tire shop begged the judge to send them to the state adult prison instead of the Buena Vista Juvenile Prison. The judge refused, and no one could understand why they'd prefer the adult prison.

Greeley Police Chief Ben Florance spoke to Greeley's City Council this week and warned them that there will be a crime increase in Greeley. The Denver police are cracking down on crime and driving the criminals out of town. "That means we and other towns outside of Denver will be getting it in the neck," the Chief said. He said the criminals will be moving to smaller towns.

G.W. Jordan, a Greeley resident who deals in patent medicines, hired a man to drive him to Brighton for some sales. He was asleep in the auto when the driver stopped and attacked him, trying to rob Jordan. The driver tried to knock him out by hitting him in the head with a sock full of sand. However, in the swing, the sock ripped open and all of the sand flew out. The driver fled, and police are looking for him.

The Commercial Department of the Teachers' College here have several students who are looking for work during the holidays. They include two bookkeepers, three stenographers, three experienced clerks and four husky high school boys.

Reuler's Department Store has stocked up on Christmas slippers. They are on sale for $1.79 a pair. The store has 1,245 pairs of slippers, so there are plenty of choices.

You can forecast the daily weather by dropping a sugar cube into a cup of coffee. If the bubbles rush to the side of the cup, you can expect heavy rain; if they come straight up and then pass to the sides, it means slight showers; if the bubbles refuse to go to the sides of the cup, you can be assured there will be no rain that day.
