In numerous states, the vote differential is a fraction of one percent. Which means that a shift of a few tens of thousands of votes would dramatically alter the electoral outcome.
I continue to be amazed that Americans tolerate a system in which a candidate can win a state by one vote or a million votes without any difference in outcome.

I agree with you, the whole system is archaic. Or maybe medieval is the correct term.
Here in Norway all states elect a number of candidates from each party according to the party's percentage of the vote, much like in Nebraska and Maine. Then there are overflow candidates, on a national level. That's for congress, congress figures out which parties are to head government and they again figure out who is to be prime minister.

Yeah, the notion of a Republic is a difficult concept for those in favor of mob rule.
