    H. A. Ironside's Teaching on Isaiah 45:7

    By Troy J. Edwards

I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things. (Isaiah 45:7)

I have examined this passage multiple times as it remains a source of contention with those of us who know that God is good, does nothing evil, but recognize that the Bible is the divinely inspired and authoritative written Word of God.

In all of my writings on this we have shown through comparing Scripture with Scripture and by citing students of Scripture (past and present) that the passage must be read in a permissive rather than in a causative sense. I was delighted to run across an affirmation by yet another well-respected figure in the church who affirms this understanding.

    H. A. Ironside, the well-respected pastor of Moody Church in Chicago from 1929 to 1948 and prolific writer of many books and Bible commentaries, had this to say on the passage:

A court of law that sentences and executes a criminal, are they doing something evil when the criminal is killed for his crimes ? If not then why would God be doing something evil if he does the very same thing ?

I love Ironside, but I would want to know the literal meaning of the word "create" in the verse in question. Does it literally mean taking responsibility or does it mean something else? Is it passive or active?

I think the point of the article is whether or not God "creates criminals", i.e., creates
people who are inclined from birth to commit criminal acts and who are unable to
resist these inclinations. How society should deal with such people is a good but
    separate question.

The 1st. Aorist Passive has generally a reflex sense, when intransitive almost always so. This is according to the Hebrew phraseology which attributes to God, the actions he permits to be done, "I make peace and I create evil—I the Lord do all these things (Isaiah xlv. 7.) Shall there be evil in a city and the Lord have not done it (Amos iii. 6) which can only be interpreted like the present of permissive agency. - Houghton, William Calvinism Scripturally Examined, and Shewn to be Inconsistent with the Statements and Totally Opposed to the General Tenor of the Word of God (London: C. J. G. and F. Rivington, 1836), p. 37 (Emphasis added)

Does not the Bible teach that we are all personally responsible for our own sins? (Rhetorical question)
