Barna: We're Experiencing Another Reformation, and Not in a Good Way

A new report released Tuesday by the Cultural Research Center (CRC) of Arizona Christian University has a troubling conclusion. American Christians are undergoing a "post-Christian Reformation," says Dr. George Barna, Director of Research at the CRC. Unlike the Protestant Reformation, whose goal was to return to the foundational teachings of the Bible, this modern movement is one where Americans are redefining biblical beliefs according to secular values.

"While the survey cannot determine if churches are failing to teach biblical truth or whether congregants are exposed to such teaching but rejecting it, the bottom line is that we are a society that has strayed far from the path of biblical truth," said Dr. George Barna in a summary of the findings. "It certainly seems as if the culture is influencing the Church more than the church is influencing the culture."

Barma's 2012 book "Pagan Christianity?" (originally published in hard cover in 2008) has this in its description, "This ground-breaking book, ..., makes an unsettling proposal: most of what Christians do in present-day churches is rooted, not in the New Testament, but in pagan culture and rituals developed long after the death of the apostles." (Access to this page has been denied.)

However in "Marketing the Church" published in 1990 (Marketing the Church by George Barna) he says "It is ... critical that we keep in mind a fundamental principle of Christian communication: the audience, not the message is sovereign", and
the wise preacher will "shape his communications according to their needs in order to receive the response he [seeks]", and
"My contention, based on careful study of data and activities of American churches, is that the major problem plaguing the Church is its failure to embrace a marketing orientation in what has become a marketing-driven environment".

Should he be surprised at the results of his suggestions?

I agree, however, there are many who are unaware and this information needs to be set out so those who may be "asleep" will wake up.

I wonder if Barna has yet caught on that we are in a post-church era...that great falling away of 2Thes 2:3.
Or is there unsubstantiated data for that?

It's interesting that people tend to see Scripture as describing their times. Is the Church now worse than it was when it did have a Reformation?

Well for the first time since Covid I went to Church. As I'm now looking around I went to my daughter's Church.

We had a woman "preacher" reading from an at least partial paraphrase, so perhaps you're right.

At least she tried to do an exegesis of Eph 4:17ff
