    Tongues recognized as a known language

    I had an US Army veteran in my office a few days ago. Our conversation centered around spiritual gifts, particularly the word of knowledge and speaking in tongues. He spoke of how the Army sent him to language school and taught him the Vietnamese language when he was training for a special forces unit. He served four tours in Viet Nam. He is still fluent in the language and often communicates with several friends who are native speakers.

    About ten years ago, he was attending a Pentecostal church in a small town in Eastern South Carolina where, during a worship service, there was an utterance in tongues and then an interpretation of the tongue. The vet recognized the language, it was Vietnamese. After the service the veteran spoke with both participants. The message in tongues was delivered by a young Hispanic man and the interpretation was given by an elderly Caucasian woman. The interpretation was an accurate depiction of what was spoken in tongues.

    My Army friend questioned both this man and woman. Neither had been in the service or to Viet Nam. Neither new anything of the Vietnamese language.

    Skeptics claim that all tongues-speaking is unintelligible gibberish, but this is an account of a recognized language unknown to the speaker and the one who gave the interpretation.

    1 Cor 12:8-10
    8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
    9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
    10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:

    Praise God

    Years ago the evangelicals would hate this story as they loved to tell how someone knew the language and heard a pentecostal curse God in tongues

    That probably happened somewhere. I saw a television program a few years ago where some couple was having a marriage ceremony in a luxury hotel on some island in the Indian ocean and the hotel staff made it an indigenous ritual with blessings in their native language but it turned out later that what they said was a bunch of racist garbage and curses and insults.

    I have believed for some time that tongues are either 'unrecognized languages' or sometimes even possibly extinct languages..never gibberish as some try to say it is...

    Way back in the day we were in a service and a woman came up for prayer. Our associate pastor Mark came up to pray for her and I was standing beside her. Well he prayed and began to speak in tongues. After it was over she said, "How do you know Yiddish?" He said he didn't know Yiddish. She told him what he had said to her. Cool Holy Ghost stuff.

    I know one man that has had about 12 experiences of it in his life, and then people telling him that he was speaking in a particular language. One was when he was being interviewed on a Christian TV program in CA, and he said he just felt this unction in tongues, and spoke it out. But no interpretation came to him which was unusual. So they went on with the interview and they began to get calls at the station about him speaking in some obscure German dialect or something along those lines, of which there was a small community of them in that area, who of course are the ones that called in.

    Another time my pastor in that same church was just praying and speaking in tongues at the end of a service, and one of the members came up and told him that he was saying 'I love you' over and over in Greek. Of course my pastor didn't know Greek.

    I once heard a message in tongues in perfect modern Hebrew. Cool stuff! Especially when the "interpretation" didn't say the same thing. The Hebrew was God talking to me. The interpretation was a wonderful exhortation to the congregation. This was in the chapel of Evangel University in Springfield, Missouri and Steve Hill was the speaker that evening.

    Sweet.

    Was it just a general exhortation or specific information?
