Why Do So Many Pentecostals and Charismatics Not Speak in Tongues Anymore?

-This is an important word for those who believe in tongues. If you don't believe in them, or you believe they are not important, or that they are a gift for a chosen few, or that they've passed away and are no longer relevant for today, then this word is not for you. You can stop reading right here. But if you are under leadership who do not believe or speak or emphasize this supernatural language, you may want to consider getting out of the ditch your leadership has dug for you, especially if you are young and the better part of your life is still in front of you.

Let me start strong. Tongues was the making of such world changing ministries as John G. Lake, Oral Roberts, and Kenneth E. Hagin. Someone asked Lester Sumrall how often he prayed in tongues, which generated this terse respond: "When I'm not preaching." The apostle Paul told the Corinthians that he prayed in tongues "more than all of them put together," one translation says. Yet modern churches who seem to know better are departing from this sure way.

I travel to churches for a living so I see firsthand how much of a diminishing emphasis there is on praying in tongues these days. There is a marked difference between now and just 20-30 years ago. Even in the back room in pre-service prayer there seems to be less and less of praying in tongues. And singing in tongues is even rarer and almost unheard of. More and more Christians seem to be uncomfortable and unfamiliar with this realm. This neglect is hurting the church. This de-emphasis is diminishing her power and effectiveness. And this is exactly what the devil wants.

The use, value, and scope of tongues is so vast that it is difficult to sometimes put into words. If we are not careful some of these things will fade away in this new generation. I'm seeing it. There are certain elements of prayer, for example, that will be lost to our youth if those who are older and more experienced in these areas fail to pass them on.

There is a book in my library I often refer to. It is called, Tongues: Beyond The Upper Room, by the late Kenneth E. Hagin. Every believer should have that book. Every church should teach thoroughly from it. Every minister should read it regularly. There are certain men of old like Hagin and many others who were sent by God with light from heaven for their generation. The challenge with each new generation is to keep the light of the Holy Ghost that these men brought to us. There is a new church methodology that is making it easier to lose this light...

I was recently reading an article written by a distinguished theologian and seminary professor. He stated that he spoke in tongues as a young man in a Pentecostal church, then added, "It never did anything for me." I thought, .... "He is such an idiot!" BTW, the same theologian recently published an article slamming WOF.

The Scriptures say that "they spoke in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance." Speaking in tongues is directly connected with being filled with the Holy Spirit.

Anyone with an ounce of sense would know that God the Holy Spirit does not give useless gifts. Everything that God gives to Christians is of great value. If it is from God, and the Holy Spirit is God, and tongues are by the Holy Spirit, then it should be respected, honored, welcomed, and fully utilized and practiced.

The real problem is that there is so little Biblical teaching about spiritual gifts and manifestations in all churches today.

The book, "Tongues, Beyond the Upper Room," by Kenneth Hagin is a tremendous book!!! It is worth its weight in gold!

When I was in Brazil I was praying for a young man and then began to speak in tongues he got excited and held me and acted like a child getting a Chrtistmas present. At the time he was discouraged and low and God opened up his ears to hear a direct message from God to him that lifted him up.
I didn't speak in Brazilian but my normal tongues ...God supernaturally gave him a 'translation' of the tongues as he understood what I was saying

It's possible that he produced "tongues" according to his own power, not having received the baptism in the Spirit but feeling pressured to speak in tongues even so. And that doesn't do anything for anyone, spiritually.

Yes, it is possible that he faked it or repeated something he had heard, etc.

There again, it could be that he just had an experience and put the brakes on and never developed a relationship with the Holy Spirit. You have to walk in the Light. That implies a progression, a continuance in the truth of God. The Bible addresses the "fellowship" or "communion" of the Holy Spirit, and that indicates a sharing together with the Holy Spirit, a cooperation with the Holy Spirit. An intellectual approach to the doctrines of the Bible devoid of intense prayer, and the leading of the Holy Spirit, results in dead theology, and spiritual coldness.

We must be doers of the Word! We have to put spiritual things into practice in order to obtain the blessings of them as promised in the Bible.

When I pray in the Spirit, in tongues, there is an activation of the Holy Spirit in my life, and blessings follow. If I neglect to pray in tongues, there is no spiritual edification forthcoming. It is simple. We must do more than just say our church believes in something, or that we believe in something, we must do what the Bible says in order to obtain the benefits promised by God.

Exactly. It's pretty ignorant to do something once and say it didn't do anything for you. This same 'intelligent' theologian would never work out one time and not see his muscles get bigger and say 'that did nothing for me' or do a cardio workout and say 'that did nothing for my stamina' and then quit. Totally disingenuous statement by him.

The word in the Greek we get 'edify' from in reference to what speaking in tongues does for us is not related to 'charging a battery' like Hagin and others taught. They didn't have batteries or know about electricity back then so the Holy Spirit wouldn't have used that analogy. The word most akin to a modern word would be 'edifice', a superstructure. The Greek word it comes from, oikodomeo, means 'to build a house' or 'erect a building'. Without going into to much detail, tongues is a revelation gift, meaning practicing it brings revelation and spiritual understanding. As we pray, and the Holy Spirit reveals the mysteries of God to us, it erects a building or structure within us built of the knowledge of God that we then live our lives from and out of. It takes a lot of time to build a house or erect a building, not doing something once and quitting.

The best book you will ever read with the most revelation and insight on tongues is at the link below, free in .pdf form. This is the book I use for one of my classes that I teach. It was written by a man who personally prayed in tongues hours a day for years, and the information in it he received by revelation from praying in tongues so extensively. It is a must read for every Christian.

I can answer the OP question directly: Because so many "Pentecostals" are taught that they can be baptized in the Spirit and NOT speak in tongues. If this is a mindset and belief, it only stands to reason that people actually believe that they have received the baptism and if tongues don't manifest, what's the harm? They still, "got it".

That's pretty much it in a nutshell.
