Luke 4:9 Then Satan brought Him to Jerusalem, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here.
10 For it is written:
'He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you,'
11 and,
'In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.' "
12 And Jesus answered and said to him, "It has been said, 'You shall not tempt the Lord your God.' "
I've wondered if the above was a vision that Satan invoked in Jesus' mind. The previous temptation involved placing him on a mountain and showing him "all the kingdoms of the world and their glory" (Mat 4:8). That cannot be done by placing him somewhere then having him look around, the world isn't flat and even if it had been, he couldn't have seen that far. And even if he could, then he wouldn't be able to discern "the glory" of all the kingdoms of the world. Maybe Satan did place him physically on a mountain but it still involved some kind of a vision.
In the passage that I quoted above, Satan must have placed him physically on the literal pinnacle of the temple. If it had been a vision then Jesus could have rejected it, claiming that he was still situated in the desert. The possibility of actually falling down from the pinnacle and either being killed in the fall or being rescued from it by angels - was integral to the temptation.
I suppose that noone was looking up when that happened, at the pinnacle of the temple which was situated hundreds of feet above the city. But how was Satan able to do all of that ? What do you think ?
