Similar to the old coal mining companies of the past century. There is an old song that goes "I owe my soul to the company store". It's a wild guess but one of our large turn of the century factories may have paid their employees "script" coins to be spent at a company owned store.
It does say "5 cents in trade", good guess on script.

I posted this to our local town page on FB and had some interesting responses. One guy said he recalled a tobacco store using or accepting the coins.

Great memory! Yes, I found a Marcos Aurelius roman denarius under the couch cushion, it was in the old coin card. No history on the coin shop printed on the card. My wife was scurrying to ready the livingroom for home church when she found it under a cushion while vacuuming. My wife vacuumed there every Week. We had few visitors to our home and about 8 at church. No one had a clue where it came from. We still have the coin and regard it as one of the signs and wonders that happened in that timeframe.

Another tip from our local historians saying the coin was used by several businesses, though they did not give a clear picture on dates, it's fairly clear it was back in the Depression era.
