Body of water south of the Dead Sea?

Hey Tom, I was looking at google earth and noticed a huge and strange body of water south of the dead sea. It looks like there are 3 cities by it; Ein Bokek, Neve Zohar and Safi.

It is divided by a bunch of dikes or something. Is this some sort of desalinization place or something? Does the stream connecting it to the dead sea flow from the dead sea or to the dead sea?

It is very curious to me. I love looking at maps and I just noticed this a few minutes ago.

It's all the dead sea, the water levels have receded and there is now a land mass in the middle of what used to be one body of water.

There is a high place near the lower half of the Dead Sea. It effectively divides the sea in half. Israel Dead Sea works is harvesting chemicals from the sea water and they have done some interesting work to extend the life of the lower half of the sea. You see, evaporation, pumping the Galilee for drinking water and natural changes in the rift valley have been causing the level of water to drop fairly rapidly. A channel was dug from the deep northern part of the sea to carry water to the southern end where the chemicals are harvested.
Here is an odd but little known fact. The water at the southern end of the Dead Sea is at a higher altitude from the water at the northern end. There are a series of dykes and pumping stations that raise the water to a sustainable level south of Masada. The places you mention include health resorts, tourist resorts and homes that have been built around what is literally an industrial pool system.
