    The law of Christ

The NKJV translation is a bit unclear so I'll quote the NASB :

    1 Cor 9:20 To the Jews I became as a Jew, so that I might win Jews; to those who are under the Law, as under the Law though not being myself under the Law, so that I might win those who are under the Law;
21 to those who are without law, as without law, though not being without the law of God but under the law of Christ, so that I might win those who are without law.

    What does that mean ?

  2. #2
6 God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you
7 and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels.
8 He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.

The law of Christ is the gospel. Repent and believe the gospel. Also, Jesus gave us a new commandment, that we should love one another as He loved us. (John 13:34)

The only other use of that particular phrase is found here...

    Galatians 6:2
Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity (futility) of their mind, having the understanding darkened...
    (Ephesians 4:17-18)

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly...
    (Psalm 1)

What about this ? Are they the same law ?

James 1:25 But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does.

James 2:12 So speak and so act as those who are to be judged by the law of liberty.

This law is connected to some pretty powerful stuff, both present blessing and future judgment.

No, I don't think they are the same because then he would have either just said "the gospel" or defined them as equal. The gospel is more than a law but it may contain a law. John 13:34 could possibly be part of "the law of Christ", which according to the verses in the OP is not the law of Moses nor part of it.

    And also we have this...

    Romans 13:8-14
    (8) Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
    (9) For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
    (10) Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
    (11) And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.
    (12) The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.
    (13) Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.
    (14) But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity (futility) of their mind, having the understanding darkened...
    (Ephesians 4:17-18)

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly...

So the law of Christ fulfills the spirit of the law of Moses rather than its letter ? But is that all there is to it : "love one another" ? And is that "the perfect law of liberty" ?

    John 13:34-35
    (34) A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
    (35) By this shall all men know that ye are My disciples, if ye have love one to another.

    I John 2:3-11
    (3) And hereby we do know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments.
    (4) He that saith, I know Him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in Him.
    (5) But whoso keepeth His word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in Him.
    (6) He that saith he abideth in Him ought himself also so to walk, even as He walked.
    (7) Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.
    (8) Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in Him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.
    (9) He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.
    (10) He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.
    (11) But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.

    I John 3:22-24
    (22) And whatsoever we ask, we receive of Him, because we keep His commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.
    (23) And this is His commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as He gave us commandment.
    (24) And he that keepeth His commandments dwelleth in Him, and He in him. And hereby we know that He abideth in us, by the Spirit which He hath given us.

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity (futility) of their mind, having the understanding darkened...
    (Ephesians 4:17-18)

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly...

Does that mean that "the law of Christ" equals everything that he taught that isn't found in the law of Moses plus his walk in general ?

    John 14:21-25
(21)He that hath My commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth Me: and he that loveth Me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest Myself to him.
    (22) Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?
    (23) Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love Me, he will keep My Words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

    (24) He that loveth Me not keepeth not My sayings: and the word which ye hear is not Mine, but the Father's which sent Me.
    (25) These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.

    I John 2:24-29
    (24) Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.
    (25) And this is the promise that He hath promised us, even eternal life.
    (26) These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you.

    (27) But the anointing which ye have received of Him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in Him.
    (28) And now, little children, abide in Him; that, when He shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before Him at his coming.
    (29) If ye know that He is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of Him.

This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity (futility) of their mind, having the understanding darkened...
    (Ephesians 4:17-18)

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly...
