    Stupid traffic lights ...

Are you allowed to say "stupid".

I went for my daily walk and needed to cross the road at a T intersection. The walk light is red. There's no vehicles coming up the T onto the main road so just give me a walk sign.

No, sorry, can't do that. We'll stop the traffic on the main road that crosses the T. Change the lights coming up the T to green to let no vehicles through, then give the main road back the green light and give you a walk sign.

Traffic lights have been around for over a hundred years and this is how they operate.

And some say we should trust the government to manage an unexpected virus.

Driving in Southern California years ago, I noted how efficiently the lights changed in response
to traffic conditions. When approaching an intersection with no traffic, the light immediately
changed to green to let me pass through.

Unfortunately, in my experience, the above is the exception not the rule.
Where I live, the lights are notoriously inefficient.
