People in New York did not even start practicing any form of distancing until late in the game...but remember the DEATH rate is what we need to look at...the infected rate and recovery is is far closer to the common flu.

The flu is just as contagious only people get symptoms earlier, early enough to go home and not cross contaminate...with this they can contaminate many before they even know they are sick...that is the difference.

BUT it was not enforced in New York until late Feb or early March...it was just 2 weeks ago the mayor and the Gov. were disagreeing about the level of precautions and mandatory guidelines needed to be instated.

WHO issued a warning but as a Republic our states were allowed to make the call to what degree they deemed necessary...New York said business as usual because we are New Yorkers!

I'm not so sure about that. According to antibody tests done much later, the Swine Flu of 2009-10 infected 1 billion people globally, I don't think Corona will go much further than that. But the Swine Flu only killed between 200-500 thousand people. Corona will either end up killing more people or it will produce peaks that are much more severe than the various flus do.

I don't know about where you live, but people here RARELY isolate with the more common flues. The only time they stay home is when they're just too sick to go to work or shopping or whatever. How many kids are sent to school sick cuz parents have to work.

That is the point....some do because they know and care...many go to work because work does not really encourage absence...but the point is we have 35,000 annually gets virtually NONE of the current interventions...none...

The death rate for an area with a life expectancy of 78 years is 35 per million inhabitants per day.

Yesterday's death rate from Corona alone for some areas :

State of New Jersey : 20
    Spain : 20
State of New York : 16.5
    Belgium : 16
    Italy : 12.5
    Holland : 9
    UK : 8.5
    State of Michigan : 8

    USA : 3
    Canada : 1.6
    Norway : 1.1
    Australia ~ 0.1

I'm looking mainly at countries or states with 10+ million inhabitants. The latter four are where the regular posters live.

Yesterday was a good day for Europe. Italy is below 10 after peaking out at 15, as are several other countries and also the state of New Jersey. Spain is also well below its peak.

I included Sweden for the sake of comparison to Norway. The only difference between the two countries that I can tell is that Sweden has less restrictions. They are currently the fifth hardest hit if we include larger countries only. They are pretty rich and aren't that large so they can handle it though.
