    Church asks-older-members-to-leave

Struggling church in Minnesota asks older members to leave

    by: The Associated Press

COTTAGE GROVE, Minnesota (AP) — A struggling Minnesota church is asking its older parishioners to leave in hopes of making it more attractive to young families.

Grove United Methodist Church in the St. Paul suburb of Cottage Grove is closing in June, with plans to relaunch in November. The present members, most of them over 60 years old, will be invited to worship elsewhere, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported. The church is asking that they stay away for two years, then consult the pastor about reapplying.

My parents used to attend a large mega-Baptist church in Kelowna, BC. The church had a rule that no member over 40 could participate with the praise team or sing individually or in groups on the platform during the Sunday service. What amazed me about this music policy is that this church had a female opera star as a member. Since she was over 40, she was barred from performing.

I don't get it, I just don't understand the thinking here. From a Christian perspective, it's just wrong, the end. From a secular seeker-friendly perspective, younger people generally have less money than their older counterparts. By discouraging older members from attending or fully participating in the services will hit the bottom line.

Well, I guess I can't think of one good reason why anyone older or otherwise should stay in that "church".

Good riddance to them (the church).
