Honey Bee update
So I went into winter with 5 hives. I lost 3...
One was not strong and I figured out it was the queen. She was a swarm queen, not lab mated, so her laying was sporadic and weak. Today I fired her and her replacement will be put in tomorrow.
The other one was 3 boxes high jam packed. So I removed two boxes as splits to start new hives after making sure the queen was not in them. Just as I was finishing up, about 1PM a bunch of robber bees showed up along with about 8 wasps. I closed them up quickly and eventually covered them to stop the fighting.
I knew I had a robber problem so yesterday I put out a bucket of sugar water, homemade feeder, and the majority of the robbers went to the bucket. Plan worked...
Either tomorrow or Friday I will requeen the three, depending on the mood.

Interesting!
What does it mean a "lab mated" queen vs. a swarm queen? I assume a swarm queen is one who left the hive, took the swarm with her and was recaptured? But maybe that's wrong.
