Shepard Smith departing Fox News after 23 years

-Shepard Smith, longtime anchor of "Shepard Smith Reporting," is stepping down from his role at Fox News, the network announced Friday.

Smith was the chief news anchor and managing director of Fox's breaking news unit as well as the anchor of his eponymous show. He joined Fox News in 1996.

The anchor has gained attention in recent years for not being afraid to criticize the Trump administration. Smith has often been a target of President Donald Trump's tweets -- as recently as on Thursday.

"Recently I asked the company to allow me to leave Fox News and begin a new chapter. After requesting that I stay, they graciously obliged," Smith said in a statement. "The opportunities afforded this guy from small town Mississippi have been many. It's been an honor and a privilege to report the news each day to our loyal audience in context and with perspective, without fear or favor. I've worked with the most talented, dedicated and focused professionals I know and I'm proud to have anchored their work each day -- I will deeply miss them...

It really is best for him to go. Both parties will benefit. CNN will sign him, they need someone to help rearrange the deck chairs on that sinking cruise ship.

Shep was one of the real journalists at Fox who was not afraid
to criticize the President when he deserved to be criticized.

    Sorry to see him go.

A few comments from Bernie Goldberg from a recorded commentary by him. I didn't transcribe the whole thing, but you'll get the gist of it. Bernie states at the beginning that he doesn't like Trump any more than Smith does. So this is not a Trump supporter going to bat for Trump. Just his observation as a news person to another one.

He didn't know where straight news ended and commentary began. But like CNN, he did it under the guise of being a hard news journalist, and not a commentator. He was the anchor of a supposedly hard news program and not an opinion show. And yet we all knew his opinions, especially about Donald Trump. Everyone who ever watched his show knew how he felt about the President. We knew he didn't like President Trump from what he said, how he said it, and from how he looked when he said it.

An example: Smith was interviewing a Wall St. Journal reporter, and asked that reporter referring to the President, "He trades in racism doesn't he?" The Journal reporter declined to answer saying he would leave that to the commentators. In reality, Smith's question 'He trades in racism doesn't he?' was commentary. Commentary, only masquerading as a question. He frequently blurred the line between news and commentary...

It's his fellow liberals in the media that will miss him. Real media elites who like Shepard Smith who also blur the lines between straight news and commentary. And like Shepard Smith, if they know it they don't really care.

I wouldn't expect a homosexual to like Trump anyway. But don't be a commentator under the guise of hosting a 'hard news program'. That's no different than CNN. Good riddance.

Although I am not surprised reading a comment like this from YOU, I think I need to back Fuego in responding to you. I was "forced" to listen to him a few times (because sometimes they like to play Fox News all day where I work) and nothing Smith ever said was "news". It was OPINION and he dared to lecture his audience based on his view point.

The 2012 article below (long before Trump became president or when anyone even knew he would run for office) expresses it best about Smith.

Is Fox TV Shepard Smith "fair and balanced" or a liberal-left Shepardista?

"Shepard Smith uses sarcasm and opinion sneakily camouflaged as fact to constantly denigrate the conservative position as if he is reporting facts. All the while pretending to be reporting the news 'fair and balanced.'"

I guess the definition of real Journalism has changed . News Journalists arent supposed to criticize or opine one way or the other They are supposed to report the news and leave the criticism to listeners

There are some that share your view:

"Is there anything wrong with being an opinionated commentator or news publication? Of course not, but some HONESTY would be appreciated. There's a reason BizPac Review identifies as a conservative media entity. It's unclear why CNN doesn't likewise identify as a liberal one.

It's likewise unclear why Smith continues to feign impartiality, or why he has bestowed an award that used to be given to non-biased journalists who "posted the news openly & honestly," as noted by some on social media"

'Seriously?' Fox's Shep Smith accepts journalism award, earns accolades from CNN's Brian Stelter

    Bingo.
