Honor Every Manifestation of the Spirit

We must honor and cherish every manifestation of God the Holy Spirit!

I read an article in a devotional claiming that many Christians are deceived in thinking that "God is currently operating the gifts of tongues, healing, prophesy, knowledge, et cetera ...." He then states, "Christendom proudly refuses to acknowledge those sign gifts fell away when the written Word of God was completed."

I posted the following on his comments page. It got deleted, so I posted it again. He, or some staff member operating his web site may be the only one that gets to read my comments, but, it has got to be said. We must raise a voice against false teaching and disinformation that masquerades as teaching from the Bible.

The Spiritual gifts of 1 Corinthians 12 is a subject where the Lord commands us to not be in ignorance, yet the majority of church members, and even preachers, in America are grossly uninformed. The person and work of the Holy Spirit is neglected and ignored by most church people today. The average church member knows nothing of the existence of these gifts, yet, the Bible explicitly commands us to covet and earnestly desire them, ... ALL of them.

Sadly, some people's theology leads them to think that God has withdrawn some of these gifts from the church, so they deem them unimportant and have no room for them in their lives or ministry. The result is that they do not obey the Bible, they do not covet, desire, or seek for these gifts to operate in their church.

Christ rebuked the religious leaders of his day because they substituted the traditions of men for the Word of God. He told them that they erred, or were mistaken, because they did not know the Scriptures or the power of God.

These spiritual gifts are the tools God places within our hands to do the work of ministry in the world today. There are several important purposes of them: 1) to bring glory and honor to God, 2) to build up and strengthen the church spiritually (edification), 3) to minister unto and meet the needs of hurting people, 4) to bring a harvest of souls into the family of God.

God's command is "Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues" (1 Cor 14:39 KJV). Any preacher, and any church, whose teaching results in people not speaking in tongues and who is not desiring the spiritual gift of prophecy is in flagrant rebellion against the plain, clear, command of God in the Holy Bible.

There is great value in each and every gift. We dare not rebel against the very clear injunction of the Scripture to earnestly desire the operation and function of these gifts in our lives and in our churches today.

If we are wise, we will honor and cherish every manifestation of God the Holy Spirit.

Cessationists are staunch supporters of their opinion, and I doubt you could say anything that would sway them. Hopefully someone on his staff read your comment, and will at least think about it.

Ultimately, the Holy Spirit must convict them, even if through your words.

I have seen that all the debate threads on these types of Christian posts, articles and forums rarely changes one person's point of view.

For example, after many many debates regarding tithing , I doubt one person ever changed their mind.

Similarly, people with entrenched beliefs -- especially when that belief is basic to their doctrine or denomination, will never change their beliefs.

I met a man who believed that the gift of tongues was given only for evangelism. So, he had a belief in tongues, but only very limited. Despite showing him the verses about tongues, he would not change his belief. And this was because it was a fundamental doctrine of his church of which he was a leader.

"KJV Only" is pretty far out. People who really believe that aren't likely to listen to anything that differs from what they already believe.
