Oddly enough, the "secular" Jewish people often do a better job of living the Bible. It is interesting that more than 80% of the Jewish people in Israel participate in all of the Biblical festivals. A majority also keep the Sabbath.
I'm not trying to start a new religion nor am I suggesting that there is salvation by works. I do think it is a good idea to read the Bible and make the effort to do the things the Bible teaches us. And yes, if it isn't about love there is no need to bother trying. Loving God and loving your neighbor are absolutely essential. If you go read that passage about the greatest commandment again you might be surprised to find that Jesus said, "Hear Oh Israel, the Lord our God is one," before He started talking about love. That is, the God of Israel is the God we serve. I don't think it is possible to love the God of Israel and not love the Jewish people. I also don't think it is possible for the Jewish people to love God without God responding with love for them.

There's this problem called sin. Jesus even condemned the law-abiding Pharisee in Luke 18 on account of his still being sinful. Like the orthodox Jews you mentioned, he thought he was better than the sinner praying next to him. Which is exactly what Jesus focused on.
