Polar vortex may have killed off 95% of stink bugs
(FOX 2) - January's polar vortex may have brought cold may have killed a majority of stink bugs.
A Virginia Tech research experiment estimated that the polar vortex may have killed as much as 95 percent of stink bugs that hadn't found shelter this winter.
That's according to the National Pest Management Association.
“While most insects will be equipped to survive a short period of very cold weather, like the recent polar vortex, it’s likely some will die from this extreme weather event,” said Dr. Brittany Campbell, entomologist with the NPMA, told AccuWeather.
The stink bugs live outside during the warm months but as summer turns to fall and then in to winter, the stink bugs are looking for a way to survive. As the outdoor temperatures cool, stink bugs will do like humans - spend time indoors.
Other invasive species, like the emerald ash borer and southern pine beetle, were also unlikely to survive the cold...

Oh man, I wish it had really killed them. We’ve had a few in the warm cycles this winter! It’s hard to fight the urge to kill ‘em! You have to carefully dispose of them. My favorite way is to flush them into the septic tank.

They've only been around for the last 20 years or less, a stowaway from China.

I had heard that they really stink if startled or injured and while I have seen a few in the house I never had a problem with gently grabbing them in a tissue and throwing them outside, kinda thought that their 'stink' was a bit exaggerated. But...while I was outside last year I accidentally crunched one and phewwwww...and this was outside and it was still terrible.

That’s because you are city folk.
