Chris Pratt responds to Ellen Page's criticism of his church on LGBTQ issues
In case you missed it, Page tweeted on Thursday about Pratt's appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, part of which he spent talking about his church. Pratt, along with Justin Bieber and his wife, Hailey Baldwin, as well as Vanessa Hudgens and other celebs, has been spotted at the Christian megachurch Hillsong.
Page noted that the church, which Hillsong's founder, Brian Houston, articulated in an August 2015 blog post, declares: "We do not affirm a gay lifestyle." He added that gay men and women are banned from holding positions of leadership in the church.
Page, a gay advocate who married Emma Portner last year, explained why she felt it was important to speak out about Pratt's church, a day after her initial comments.
Pratt argued in his response that his church is not anti-LGBTQ. He pointed to the fact that the Bible looks upon divorce unfavorably, and he said that he himself is accepted, even though he finalized his divorce to actress Anna Faris last year. He confirmed his engagement to Katherine Schwarzenegger last month.
Pratt also said his church's stance on a given issue may not necessarily coincide with his own.
"My faith is important to me but no church defines me or my life, and I am not a spokesman for any church or any group of people," Pratt wrote. "My values define who I am."
