Born and raised in the big city and I remember folk raking leaves and burning them either at the curb or in a pile in alleys...and some folk did have the burn barrels.

That was the one chore we all fought over.

We burned trash and experienced the terror of the odd aerosol can exploding!

I can remember folks burning off their lawns to kill weeds.

Growing up we had some neighbors that burned trash, not rural, it stunk up the neighborhood. They had an old wood burning stove in their garage, so..one day I decide to put a few bricks on their chimney.

    Problem solved.

My Grandaddy had one, and we loved to burn the trash in it. I now do not have green pick-up, so I have to burn the leaves and limbs over in the side yard. (but not in a barrel, it wouldn't all fit!)
