Thread: When Hoffa Visited Our Neighborhood

Growing up on a certain road in the rurals of Michigan we had rumors about this gated estate up the road. A gated drive in the most remote swamp area of our county. Mysteries abounded but one thing we seemed to know was there was something back there we werent supposed to know about. Many locals spoke of there being a host home for hitmen and other mob guys that needed to cool down from the big city. This was the early 70's we spoke of such things.

This past weekend I saw an old friend from downstate that said he was staying at a place up the road from where I grew up. Of course I said "where??". When he told me the crossroads I immediately asked him if that was the gated mansion in the swamp. He said "that's the place". Wow. Ok, gather yourself here. I said we used to have stories about that place and he told me a few things about the place back in the day. He did say the owner was a friend of certain "business men" from the cities. The owner did business with such and one of them was Jimmy Hoffa. The family that now owns the place are just everyday kind of folks. There is nothing more entertaining than a good mystery unless of course it's a mystery you just had answered by an old friend.

I remember Norvel Hayes said he was visiting people in jail one time and a guy called him over to talk to him. It turned out to be Jimmy Hoffa. He said something along the lines to Norvel that he was not guilty of this particular thing he was sitting in jail for. Don't remember any more of the details other than Norvel said he prayed with him and asked the Lord if he was innocent have him released. Norvel said he was released a few days later.

After getting the presidential pardon, Jimmy got himself in a slinger with his pushiness into political things. People knew where he went but held that secret to their graves. The case is still open. The FBI believes he was stuffed in a steel barrel and burned, barrel lid welded on, tossed in a compactor and sold with crushed cars overseas to an auto recycle and manufacturer. Imagine the irony here. Mr Teamster himself being part of a Datsun B-210.

Yes, and it then set off the joking about the Pontiac Silverdome endzone. More recently there was a tip from a Detroit suburb his remains were under someone’s driveway. No body of evidence had been found.

Two houses and a large “barn” warehouse. The stories of cars sunk in the creek etc are just pure imagination, though there could have been plenty of heavy equipment to help hide stuff.

Then, 8 miles south on the same road there was a nightclub speak-easy that was known for smuggling booze from Canada to our area. Then, the same boats would proceed to Mr Capone’s operation in Chicago just down the lakeshore. This area nightclub stayed in operation through the 60’s until it was destroyed in a fire. There are still the stories of tunnels for escape and hauling liquor, the property is still owned by a nationally famous Chicago based family. The club was called “The Ponytail” but by then was legit.
