Mr. Putin wants to preserve Russia's military base in Syria and prop up its major ally in the region.

Given that both sides of the Syrian conflict are major human rights violators, I don't see why the U.S. should be concerned with Russia's involvement. And since the U.S. is itself engaging in airstrikes on ISIS, I would assume that this would be an opportunity for collaboration.

For the time being, in this one particular location, the U.S., Iran, and Russia all have the same goal.

It seems that Russia is trumping the continuation of Assad's regime. ISIS affords them with an opportunity to use military might without hinderance to ensure that.

We have weak leadership and Putin is taking advantage of it. He is taking charge. We are dallying over there and getting no where. Now we will see what Putin can do.

Looks like Mr. Putin is not going after ISIS:

In a second day of raids in Syria, Russian warplanes carried out a new round of airstrikes on Thursday that once again — contrary to Moscow’s assertions — appeared to be targeting not the Islamic State but a rival insurgent coalition.
