The difference is that with Obama the tea party inspired congress pushed for cuts and shut down the government to force cuts .. the media sided with Obama so they couldn't force cuts
With trump they again sided with the democrats over the government shiutdown so Trumps ability to force them to make cuts is limited

US government debt has increased at a steady rate since 2008 and is now (today) at $23 trillion. I remember when posters were outraged when Obama had brought it to around $14 trillion.
Note that the Republicans controlled both the House and the Senate throughout 2015-2018, including the first two years of Donald Trump's presidency. I see no difference in the increase of debt involving that time period, the increase is steady throughout.
