Godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 1 Timothy 6:6-9
I think of that more as a minimum parameter. Not as a foundation.

    I think it's VERY foundational.

I agree it is foundational...God will provide all our NEEDS...we start from there

God can and does add wealth but it rests on a foundation of contentment not striving for riches

I might add not everyone is called to wealth nor could they handle the wealth if it was given to them...

The character to handle wealth is found in Christ, in him we have all things including wisdom. Paul was consecrated both in need and in plenty.

I do as well....the key to all of God's will is godliness...attaining His character through relational transformation. And in that process we are peaceful with whatever state HE leads us to. The constant debate does God want us rich or poor is really ...what's the word....IRRELEVANT?

I might add the next verse :

6:10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

Some will say that one can become rich without trying to become rich out of a love for money and that that is a good thing, a sign that one is blessed, favored, anointed by God. That Abraham and Job were exceedingly materially wealthy so why shouldn't we be ? Here's an other verse on material wealth :

James 1:9 Let the lowly brother glory in his exaltation,
10 but the rich in his humiliation, because as a flower of the field he will pass away.
11 For no sooner has the sun risen with a burning heat than it withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beautiful appearance perishes. So the rich man also will fade away in his pursuits.

This one doesn't deal with the not-so-rich trying to become rich, it deals with someone who already is rich ! The metaphor used is the same as in Isaiah 40:6 and the same as here :

1 Peter 1:24 “All flesh is as grass, And all the glory of man as the flower of the grass.
The grass withers, And its flower falls away,
25 But the word of the Lord endures forever.”

So material wealth in and of itself belongs to the category of the flesh. It can be employed for good of course but in and of itself it's just a human thing, something carnal. Then why did God make such a point out of blessing Abraham and Job with material wealth ? First of all they didn't have the true spiritual riches that we have. Neither one was born again. The Holy Spirit was upon Abraham at times, I'm not sure about Job. But they didn't have the fullness of the baptism of the Spirit like we do. The OT speaks to us in metaphors, including when it comes to riches. The true riches are mentioned in the next verses in James :

1:12 Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.

Some will say that material wealth is a more substantial form of riches, something that makes more of a difference than "the crown of life". Well in that case you don't know what spiritual riches are. Smith Wigglesworth said that he would rather be in the anointing of the Holy Spirit for five minutes than have the entire world handed to him with a fence around it. He meant what he said.

They should have rewritten it to reflect the standards of those times. The mansion as such works, now add a yacht and private ports around the lake, a private army including a chariot and carrying chair, private ports along the coast and a huge private luxury ship capable of crossing the Mediterranean in days if need be. Totally realistic and totally not what happened.
