    Mormons are predominantly white so claiming to have reached native Americans 1500 years earlier doesn't seem to have made them many native American converts. But Mormonism placed the America of the white settlers in an ongoing religious setting and that must have been appealing to many.

    I'm not sure but I think it might have to do with the "golden plates" that were dug up. And perhaps also gave them reason in claiming or settling out west?
