Heck, I even had that attitude somewhat because I was around it and 'taught' it. Once I started being the target of it it was different. I think a lot of it came from teachers like Copeland (and I like Copeland, this isn't a bash of him) and others and it flowed down to the pastors thinking this is how they were supposed to be in their churches. You know how hard nosed he was about some things and you just can't be a pastor and be like that. Well you can, and many of the churches thrived. But I'd never sit under anyone like that again.
Sounds a lot like the apostle Paul to me.

So while addressing the attitude of the teacher he went on to denounce the opposition with some really strong words....sort of an oxymoron...the teacher says teach with patience and gentleness and then the teacher adds...."...and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will."

So, let me extricate from the cultic/abusive leadership context and move to the healthy benevolent leadership model.

I think that every Christian should have accountability to someone, regardless of level. What I mean is voluntary submission to a godly leader who agrees to pray for us, counsel us and guide us in our growth. It does not necessarily need to be a wide scope relationship either, perhap just an open door policy as an agreed upon confidant.

I meet with my Sr Pastor every 2-3 months, let him know how my ministry projects are doing, and gladly seek his counsel and correction, because:
    - He has earned my trust and walks a high road himself
    - I don't trust myself 100%, and realize I also need guidance

I remember talking to our main elder, who admitted that he tends to have a big ego, and needed somebody like our Sr pastor to submit to.

If everyone has to answer to someone, I think you would see more growth from the younger Christians, and less chance of abuses from high-level leaders.
