    Daniel 9:27

    Daniel 9:27

    27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week:
    and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and
    the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations
    he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and
    that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

    I held the popular view that this verse is speaking of the future tribulation antichrist for years. As a matter of fact, the majority of the church still agrees as it relates to last days theology that the "he" in the above verse in Daniel 9:27 is none other but the "antichrist" who shall come at the beginning of the Great Tribulation. They arrive at the "he" being the antichrist from the previous verse 9:26 where they say that the "prince" is a reference to the antichrist in the Great Tribulation period. But I believe Dan 9:26 is a prophecy that has already come to pass. "The people of the prince that shall come" was the Roman army of Prince Titus. They came and destroyed the city and the sanctuary in fulfillment of Daniel's prophecy. Jesus also prophesied of this happening in Luke 19:41-44, 21:20-24.

    Popular current church eschatology says that the tribulation period is 7 years long. They say that this 7 year period is the 70th week of Daniel's prophecy. The popular end times teaching is that 69 weeks of Daniel's prophecy have been fulfilled and that the future 70th week will be fulfilled in the 7 year tribulation period. According to popular belief amongst the majority of ministers and saints alike, the antichrist will come in peacefully in the beginning of the tribulation confirming a 7 year covenant with Israel. Then it is said by the popular eschatology teachers that in the midst of the week which would be after 3 1/2 years, the antichrist will break this covenant with Israel and cause their sacrifices and oblations to cease in a rebuilt temple.

    Am I the only one on this forum who once believed this popular last days theology? Does anyone here still hold to this popular teaching of eschatology?

    Yes, the Roman army destroyed the city and sanctuary.

    25 "Know therefore and understand,
    That from the going forth of the command
    To restore and build Jerusalem
    Until Messiah the Prince,
    There shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks;
    The street shall be built again, and the wall,
    Even in troublesome times.
    26 "And after the sixty-two weeks
    Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself;
    And the people of the prince who is to come
    Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary.
    The end of it shall be with a flood,
    And till the end of the war desolations are determined.
    27 Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week;
    But in the middle of the week
    He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering.
    And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate,
    Even until the consummation, which is determined,
    Is poured out on the desolate." Daniel 9:25-27

    the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary.

    If we know the Romans under Titus, destroyed the city and sanctuary, then we also know the prince who "is to come" is Roman, which today would be called European.

    This is why many down through the ages believed, and still believe today that the Pope is the antichrist.

    Jesus taught us about this.

    15 "Therefore when you see the 'abomination of desolation,' spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place" (whoever reads, let him understand), 16 "then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take anything out of his house. 18 And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes. 19 But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! 20 And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be.
    Matthew 24:15

    when you see the 'abomination of desolation,' spoken of by Daniel the prophet,

    Jesus referred to Daniel concerning this subject, whose context is about His coming and the end of the age.

    Paul plainly writes to us about what happens at His coming.

    And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming. 2 Thessalonians 2:8
