Hmmmm, now that's an interesting thought, Brother.
Some people are extremely good at "talking the talk, AND walking the walk," while all the time, they're just faking it.

That’s true, but we should be able to discern who is fake and who is not. That is if we’re sensitive to the Holy Spirit. No way would Oral Roberts taken him as his son knowing he wasn’t born again. I don’t believe Pearson could’ve fooled him.

Not only that Carmen was a member of Carlton's church, he was also one of pastor Pearson's best friends.
I find it nearly impossible that Carlton could fool Carmen that he was not saved. I believe Rev. Pearson was a saved Christian at one time.
In short, Carlton got deceived and replaced sound doctrine with the false doctrine of universalism (all will be saved).
Carmen was devastated by what happened to his good friend and brother in the Lord. I'm sure he must have spent many hours trying to win Carlton back to the genuine faith he once had.
I was hurt also back then when I heard of Carltons acceptance of universalism. I still pray for his salvation, as I'm sure Carmen does too.
If you put God First, you have Him at Last.

Well I didn't mean that Carlton was trying to fool anybody. I just think he may have assumed that he was born again because he had always been in church and abiding by their teaching. A lot of people in the Pentecostal world grow up in legalism and then when they get out on their own they abandon the church and what they were taught. Carlton questions the justice of a god who would send people to hell for eternity for a few years of bad behavior on Earth. I have a hard time believing that any child of God would question God's divine justice.

For what it's worth, I knew that's what you meant, Brother - And Yes, unfortunately, I've seen people who grew up in strict, legalistic denoms stray far, far away after a while too.

The holiness movement that was the life of small pentecostal churches did more to teach performance grade churchianity than it did bringing people into the intimacy of Christ. Young ladies couldnt and didnt dare pretty themselves up, you had to play cards in secret and God help you if someone recognized you in spite of a disguise as you stood in line at the “thee-ay-ter”.

The culture was a bit different back then and those things meant different things than they do now. Card playing could quickly lead to gambling, dancing was often an outlet for an expression of sexuality and theatre plays could be more worldly than it's possible to understand when seeing the same thing today.

Definitely different today. Now basically anything goes. Now they show the movies in the church; have the dances at the church; and the pastor usually has a girlfriend in addition to his wife.
