The odd part was that the ads suddenly popped up related to things mentioned in in-person conversations, NOT conversations done thru their phones...and as these were not common everyday items it made them all the more suspicious.

Well, a couple of days ago on my way home I stopped at an estate sale I saw. I looked at a lot of items and wound up buying a metal shelving unit and one of those long orange extension cords.

So I get home and want to sit back and chill for a bit. I turn on my phone and go to the facebook marketplace as I was looking at something there earlier...and it was NOT shelving units or extension cords. I had NO plans to buy either item, they were just something I ran across that had a really good price that I knew I could put to use.

I refresh the page and what are the first two ads I see? The first was for metal shelving units and the second was for orange extensions cords! I don't think I'd even ever seen ads for them before and I certainly never did searches for them before either.

So how could that happen? Wayyy too coincidental! Its looking very credible that they are indeed eavesdropping even when your off your phone.

    Of course facebook denies it:

If he puts tape on his camera and microphone maybe you should to.

Nope...nothing at all personal. I grabbed those items and paid cash.

I tried it today and it didn't happen but yeah, I've heard too many reports of it also. Maybe they only do it so often so suspicion isn't aroused?

Maybe Google Earth saw you at the estate sale and sent the information to Facebook.

It's possible they only target some keywords/phrases. Here are a few big money words to try: mesothelioma , refinance, insurance, lawyer.

So you might try.. "I have to refinance my home mortgage because the lawyer told me the insurance won't cover my uncles mesothelioma."

That ought to ring some bells.

I came up with a better idea. Maybe they simply track your location through the GPS on the phone and see which shops you are in the vicinity of then make ads based on that.

They also need a buyer otherwise collection doesn't make sense. They don't publicize that service, real time spying but may be selling it under the radar to select entities. You have to follow the money.

    Even more worrisome.

Facebook backs off its creepy plans to secretly access private medical records and match the data to user profiles

Facebook has been in talks with high profile US hospitals in an attempt to obtain patient data about illnesses and prescriptions.

The project was being led by a Stanford cardiologist called Freddy Abnousi who claims to lead 'top-secret projects' on his LinkedIn.

The project aimed to build profiles of people that combined their medical conditions - gathered from the hospitals - and their social and economic status - gleaned from their information on Facebook.

According to the company, the goal was to match this medical data and Facebook user data in order to help hospitals work out which patients might need special care.

However, the creepy proposal has been put on pause after the Cambridge Analytical scandal raised concerns about how much data the company takes from users.
