WASHINGTON (AP) — The Latest on the Trump administration moving the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem (all times local):

    11:29 a.m.

President Donald Trump says moving the U.S. Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem is "the right thing to do."

Trump's addressing his decision to move the embassy from Tel Aviv at the Conservative Political Action Conference. He says foreign countries put pressure on him not to move the embassy and begged him, "Don't do it, don't do it."

Trump says the campaign against moving the embassy was "incredible." But he says the campaign in favor of moving the embassy was also incredible.

Trump says that ultimately, his administration "did the right thing."

His comments come as the State Department notifies Congress on Friday that the Jerusalem embassy will open in May.

Two Trump administration officials say the new U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem will open in May 2018 to coincide with the 70th anniversary of Israel declaring independence.

The officials say Congress is being notified of the impending move on Friday. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson signed off on the security plan for the new embassy on Thursday.

The officials weren't authorized to discuss the plan publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

A ribbon-cutting is being planned for mid-May. Israel proclaimed independence on May 14, 1948.

The May opening marks a significant acceleration. Vice President Mike Pence had said previously the embassy would open by the end of 2019. And Tillerson had said it could take years.

Initially, the embassy will consist of just a few offices inside an existing U.S. facility in Jerusalem....

US Embassy Moving To Jerusalem On Israel's Independence Day
    by Tyler Durden

    Via MiddleEastEye.com,

The US will relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv earlier than expected and may use a consular facility already based in the city.

The United States plans to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem on 14 May, the 70th anniversary of Israel's independence, a US official confirmed on Friday.

In December, US President Donald Trump recognised Jerusalem as Israel's capital, and signalled Washington's intention to relocate its embassy. The move infuriated many of Washington's Arab allies and dismayed Palestinians ...

...Officials said the US could initially retrofit a small suite of offices at the existing facility to accommodate current ambassador David Friedman and one or two top aides including his chief of staff.

That would allow the administration to hang an "embassy" sign over the door and formally open it in time for Israeli independence day on 14 May.

    Israeli congratulations

Soon after US officials announced the May date, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that he is in contact with the US administration and will respond if and when an official American announcement is made on the planned embassy move to Jerusalem. Netanyahu is scheduled to visit the White House on 5 of March 5.

Israeli intelligence minister Yisrael Katz congratulated Trump in a tweet.

"There is no greater gift than that! The most just and correct move. Thanks friend!" Katz wrote....

Scoop: U.S. to move Israel embassy to Jerusalem May 14
Barak Ravid of Israel's Channel 10 news
    https://www.axios.com/us-israel-emba...6afae9c10.html

The U.S. embassy will move to Jerusalem on May 14ththe day Israel declared its independence in 1948 and the day President Harry Truman recognized the state of Israel, Israeli officials told me. The White House isn't commenting, but a U.S. official confirmed the plans.

    The bottom line:

That's a lot sooner than expected. During his visit to Israel last month, Vice President Mike Pence said only that the embassy would move to Jerusalem by the end of 2019.

    The details:

According to Israeli officials, in the first phase an "interim embassy" will be opened at the consular annex in West Jerusalem that handles visas and passports. The office of the ambassador will move to the building, and Ambassador David Friedman will work from there with a small staff.

The consular annex will change its name to the U.S. embassy. The building, located in the Arnona neighborhood, will be an interim embassy and the permanent location of the embassy will be determined at a later stage.

    Behind the scenes:

Officials in Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said Netanyahu did not ask the White House to expedite the move. They said Netanyahu is in constant contact with the administration and will comment once an official statement is made.

    What we're hearing:

The staff of the consular annex in Jerusalem were notified today that starting May 14, they will become the staff of the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem. The consular section will continue operating at the Jerusalem embassy and will provide visa and passport services to both Israelis and Palestinians.....

As the leaders of the world threaten and heap abuse on both Israel and the US, Israel welcomes recognition of a fact that was established long ago. I went by the Consulate building a couple days ago that will become the temporary embassy. I also visited the building that will become the permanent embassy of the US to Israel eventually. The current occupants of the future embassy are quite happy with the future prospects of their building but the consulate building is obviously too small. The winds of change are blowing. The brisk increase of activity is thrilling. I can almost feel God smiling.
