I disagree with much of RCC doctrine (papal infallability being one of the "biggies"), but I can
appreciate the fact that their doctrine doesn't fluctuate in response to changing cultural norms.
As a result, they act as a sort of "soft damper" when the culture is changing too rapidly.

Well, we have to allow for the historical defining process from the get-go. There were attempts at getting doctrines correct, and stable, referring to Scripture, etc. E.g., hypostatic Union didn't get well defined until Chalcedon in 451. And even THEN, the Eastern and Western wing had tension.

But somehow, the Peter-built "Church" became the ultimate arbiter over the Word, instead of submitting to the authority and pre-eminence of the Word. This allowed spurious doctrines like Mary's Assumption, dogmatized in 1950.

    Here's a segment of the pope’s statement:

"...There are those who believe they can maintain a personal, direct and immediate relationship with Jesus Christ outside the communion and the mediation of the Church. These are dangerous and harmful temptations.
It was a bit of a misquote but still what he is saying is that no one can have a personal relationship with the Lord without the catholic church overseeing it.

I was born and raised catholic, went thru catholic schools K thru 12 and almost all my family is still catholic to some degree. That being said I've seen a lot of changes since I was a child: Women must wear something on their heads in church...no, you don't have to now...if you're divorced and remarried you're excommunicated...no, its ok, we won't kick you out now...if you want communion you must fast from the night before...no, just fast for an hour before communion now...you can't eat any meat on Fridays except for fish...no, meat is fine on Fridays now.

There's more but you get the idea. Matter of fact I was curious when a lot of the different doctrines were introduced and found this...scroll down and you can see when a lot of them came into being:

This was for your mother's funeral? Were you able to give an altar or something similar?

JD: Yes it was. It was still a Catholic Mass, so I had to work in that context, where the priest was the main person. So an altar call was not in the "program."

YET, I said that Momma knew she was not good in herself, but knew to receive Jesus in her heart, and she is saying to "you all" to return to Jesus, all who have fallen away.

One other note is that the "PRAYER CARDS" that used to be handed out are no longer prayers to shorten "purgatory time", but more of a dedicatory prayer. I wrote a prayer/poem that honored her love for God.

    That was wonderful.

If you're comfortable with it would you like to share it here?

Lord, we thank you for Momma B, who lived as an example of how to be a wonderful wife and mother, with that sweet spirit, beautiful smile and kind nature.

Who showed us how to be a hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in God’s sight. 1 Peter 3:4

As a person who loved Jesus with all her heart and reflected that love for her family. John 13:34

Who never said an unkind word for anyone, but only spoke of those things that were noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent or praiseworthy. Phil 4:8

And may the God of peace dwell in us as he dwelt in Momma B. We will miss her deeply.
