It's "a big ol' front porch," Mike Huckabee says. He's created a new TV show for people who don't have one on the networks: Huckabee is "for and about that great, big middle of America that gets ignored by and totally dismissed by the coastal elites."

Huckabee premieres on TBN at 8 p.m. Eastern Saturday night. The network will show it again Sunday evening at the same time. The former governor, presidential candidate and Fox News host talked with The Stream about his new program, which promises not just hot topics, but also heart, humor and hot licks.

    Politics Without the Shouting

Politics and national issues will be discussed, Huckabee tells The Stream. But "it won't be people yelling at each other, talking over each other." Instead the show will practice what he calls "vertical politics."

The "issue won't be 'Is it left, is it right?' But rather, 'Is it up, is it down? Does it make things better? Does it make them worse? And if so, how?" He wants to "talk to people from across the political spectrum in a very civil way."

Huckabee will be talking to news makers. In fact, his first guest is Donald Trump. Said Huckabee when the appearance was announced, "When you launch the first show by interviewing the President of the United States, clearly, you're coming out of the box strong."

However, Huckabee stresses he's also heading into small towns, to talk to the folks there, get their take on things. Each week, he'll feature what he calls "Huck's Heroes," ordinary people who have done amazing things that don't make it onto the front page. "It's the kind of folks who showed up in Houston when the floodwaters came," he says, "or the ones that went to their neighbors and help bail them out of flooded homes in Jacksonville, Florida."

There's More to Life than Politics

Gov. Huckabee stresses that the show goes far beyond the topics of the day, partially because we all need the break.

I just think people who all they do is talk about politics and what makes them upset, they need to step back and they need to take a big breath, and as I like to say, listen to some music , put your feet in the water, look at the sky. Don't just live in this very tense, blood pressure-inducing world of politics and news that makes you crazy.

To that end, Huckabee promises wholesome laughter and song. "It's going to be an old-fashioned kind of television viewing that people can sit back, put their feet up, relax and have an hour where they'll be informed of things they probably never heard," he explains....

...He promises comedians. "People need to laugh, people need to realize, 'You know what? Life isn't all bad. There's some pretty good things going on.'"

Fans of the old Fox News show will remember his live music segments. The new show will have an even greater emphasis on song. And it's not just because the bass playing politician wants the chance to jam with Music City musicians. Huckabee describes music as a "civilizing force and it's a unifying force."

"I know that there are people that can't stand anything I say or think politically," he says. Music takes down all the barriers. Sometimes he's walked into a music store on the way to an event.

Here I am dressed up in a suit and there's some kid and he's got more metal piercings in his face than you'd see on the grill of a Buick and he's tattooed all over and, you know, he's a young kid but he's picking up a guitar and he's playing it — I might go over to that kid and have a conversation. You know, he doesn't see me as some hideous square guy that he can't stand the sight of. I'm not looking at him as some kid with tattoos. We're musicians. We're talking about something that brings us together.

...On the President and Daughter Sarah

The man who spent much of his life in a very public spotlight now has a daughter there too. "I'm very proud of my daughter," he says of Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the president's press secretary.

I think she' is doing a terrific job. And the President certainly thinks so. Every time I talk to him he'll say, "Huckabee, you're a good guy. I like you. But I tell you, your daughter, she's great. She's better than you. She's terrific." So, he always rubs that in a little bit.

He's very proud of her, and not just for her work. "I think she has maintained a real witness of her faith," he says.

She's calm in the midst of hostile questions and repetitive questions and antagonistic questions. People will ask me all the time, "How does your daughter do it?" And I'll say, "She's praying just before she goes out there. And she understands where her peace comes from."

A Show Hosted by a Christian

Huckabee says his new show marks a "real turn" for TBN. "It is going to be the first time they've ever done something that is not overtly religious in its content because it is not a Christian show. It is a show that is hosted by a Christian." He hopes the show will convey his belief that we should take God seriously, but we shouldn't take ourselves too seriously.

We asked what Stream readers can be praying for the show.

I want them to pray that this show becomes a window where light comes from. That it's not going to be preachy. But I hope for believers it's edifying, that it is encouraging. And I hope for non-believers that it gives them a sense that loving God isn't that crazy and it doesn't look that weird when I see it applied in music or in politics or whatever.

It's not going to be an overtly Christian show where I'm trying to, you know, get them to pray a prayer and call a toll-free number. But I hope to be able to represent how a Christian will approach issues and will approach life. And if that can happen, you know I think it's going to be a very, very positive and worthwhile show.

Huckabee premieres Saturday night at 8 p.m. Eastern on TBN, with the show repeating 8 p.m. Sunday night.

I probably won’t be a regular viewer, but I’ll watch the first show since the President will be the guest.
When your praise match your prayers, the answer will come.
