Russian Troops on The Ground in Syria

Russian forces have begun participating in military operations in Syria in support of government troops, three Lebanese sources familiar with the political and military situation there said on Wednesday.

The sources, speaking to Reuters on condition they not be identified, gave the most forthright account yet from the region of what U.S. officials say appears to be a new military buildup by Moscow, one of President Bashar al-Assad's main allies, though one of the sources said the numbers of Russians involved so far were small.

Two U.S. officials said Russia has sent two tank landing ships and additional aircraft to Syria in the past day or so and has deployed a small number of naval infantry forces.

The U.S. officials, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, said the intent of Russia's military moves in Syria remained unclear. One of the officials said initial indications suggested the focus was on preparing an airfield near the port city of Latakia, an Assad stronghold.

U.S. Moves to Block Russian Military Buildup in Syria

The United States on Tuesday moved to head off preparations for a suspected Russian military buildup in Syria as Bulgaria agreed to an appeal from the Obama administration to shut its airspace to Russian transport planes. The planes’ destination was the Syrian port city of Latakia.

The administration has also asked Greece to close its airspace to the Russian flights, Greek and American officials said, but Greece has not publicly responded to the request.

I'm not sure why this intervention is viewed as a problem. Of course the Russians have their own interests in mind, but both sides (the Assad government and its opponents) are major human-rights violators, so I don't know why the U.S. should be concerned one way or the other.

US created ISIS to topple Assad. Russkies can't tamper with that.

Of course this all a continuation of the lies that have us entrenched over there.

ISIS bad, we must do whatever we can to stop them! ... Putin shows up to fight ISIS.. hey stop that!

You're prophesying that the US will intervene to save ISIS from a Russian empowered Assad ? Okay, I'll add that to the list of prophecies around here that are supposed to come to pass in the near future.

Lets see if they will come to the aid of their alleged friends ISIS instead of merely bombing them for "symbolic" reasons and lend them some actual support instead of merely messing with their favorite non friend the Russians whom they dont like to see on the map anywhere. Assad is fighting other forces than ISIS too you know.

Daesh seems to be the new term world leaders are using to refer to ISIS. It's a very clever term because it is both an Arabic acronym for ISIS and also sounds like both Daes "someone who crushes something underfoot" and Dahes "one who sows discord". Both of which are derogatory. ISIS hates it but it is commonly used throughout the Arab world about them. ISIS loves being referred to as "Islamic State ... ..."
