Amateurs are spending their personal resources and time to dig into Donald Trump's past in hopes of uncovering a nugget that will displace him from office, Politico reports.

One such detective, 40-year-old Geoff Andersen of San Francisco spends 16 hours a day, seven days a week looking at the president's finances. Andersen has spent almost $45,000 in personal savings plus his friends' donations since November to dig for damaging information.

Others, from a Florida art teacher to a short-order cook in Ireland are researching the president.

The sleuths also look closely at the 2016 campaign and share their results on social media and sometimes in tips to the FBI and media.

Jay Sekulow remarked that the efforts are probably a waste of time.

"I'm not saying no one can legitimately provide some information," the chief counsel American Center for Law and Justice told "America's Newsroom" on Monday. "If the special counsel can't find it, there's no way these sleuths are going to be able to find it either."

Trump has been doing business in the public eye his entire career, the lawyer pointed out, adding that he doubts even the special counsel will be able to find anything too damaging on the president.
