    It has been argued that the heroin epidemic is due to people who are in legitimate pain being unable to get their prescription pain meds anymore. There are people, like it or not, who will need narcotics for their entire life and will have to struggle to get them. I worked with a woman who was in a very bad car accident and was on long term pain management. She had to get shoulder surgery and the pain management clinic would not approve her for opioids after surgery. She was literally told to take tylenol! This woman is not a junkie! It is true that pain meds are inappropriately prescribed and those doctors should be disciplined, but it is also true that the DEA has made it so difficult for physicians that some won't prescribe for anyone anymore. There is a problem, but the solution is just causing more problems.
