Attorney General Jeff Sessions recently addressed the Christian nonprofit Alliance Defending Freedom in an off-camera speech. Some Democrats and LGBT advocates were not pleased that Sessions chose to address the group.

NBC News reports that Sessions addressed a crowd gathered for Alliance Defending Freedom's Summit on Religious Liberty in Orange County, California.

When many Democrats and LGBT advocates heard the news that Sessions addressed the group, they were upset that the country's attorney general would give his time and attention to a Christian group, which they even called a "hate group."

"You can judge a person by the company they keep and tonight — Attorney General Jeff Sessions is choosing to spend his time speaking in front of one of the country's leading anti-LGBTQ hate groups," Democratic National Committee spokesman Joel Kasnetz wrote in a statement emailed to NBC News. "Sessions' appearance at this event, as the top law enforcement official in the country, brings into question whether the attorney general intends to protect all Americans."

"The nation's top lawyer rallying with an anti-LGBTQ hate group? Outrageous," added the Human Rights Campaign in a blog post.

ADF often takes on religious freedom cases and defends Christian clients such as Jack Phillips, whose case will be heard by the Supreme Court this fall in Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission. Phillips was accused of discriminating against members of the LGBT community after he refused to make a cake for a gay wedding.
