Or how do you know, O husband, whether you will save your wife?

Now...explain to me how those words are not given to us as an instruction to live by? Paul states no exceptions and neither does Jesus...It's not legalism to advise believers to obey the instructions of the NT regarding divorce while applying the truths of God's faithfulness to us when we do..
    This is also true :

Romans 7:6 But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.

2 Cor 3:6 who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

Tell me Colonel...what is the SPIRIT of Paul's words in 1 Corinthians 7:14-16?

The sum of the Word is truth. As discussed previously in this thread, God's love is the spirit of all commandments. Romans 13:8 I believe. Love may bring about reconciliation with the unbelieving spouse or even salvation.

Well then, let me be a voice of someone married 11 1/2 years, divorced, and now remarried for 5 1/2 years. I think Jakes was WRONG to say these 2 should get divorced. None of us are guaranteed "happiness" and when we commit to a marriage with stick with it, regardless of the circumstances. Are there "loop holes"? Of course...the ones already listed, adultery, unbeliever, and I would add that if someone is in an abusive relationship they need to get out, and get safe. If the Lord gives them the ok to divorce, then who am I to judge?

Exactly...and Paul's words are stating that the believer should love their spouse with GOD's love and remain faithful to them as GOD remains faithful to us..
We are to exemplify God's character to our spouse because we are witnesses of HIM to them...not witnesses that we quit when it hurts to much or when we are failed on or when things get really hard...that we are to stick with them the way He sticks with us so just like if we opt to divorce Him, He would never divorce us...

THAT is the spirit of Paul's words and that is the sum of scripture as well...

Interpretation of a passage in context AND the sum have to be used..the sum confirms of fleshes out the context, it does not alter it...

Ahem my exact words were "Quest believes that it is ok to divorce an unbelieving spouse who doesn't want to be married" emphasis on whom doesn't want to be married

Lets leave the conversation within it's setting please ...

I await your response to what I actually said not what you changed my words into :)

Again the letter kills .. this is what Legalism does .. It strips everything of context and adopts a one sized fits all approach.

Slavery, unequally yoked with an unbeliever, etc. The danger is in making it too easy to jump from what the "letter" defines as a-okay and straight over into "the lord allows me to do (insert whatever)". If there is nothing else than the letter then people tend to try hard to stick with that and when they go bust on that they just rebel against it all. That's one way the letter kills.

God's love to us, the ones showing God's love, is also part of this.

I missed this and Lista's comment brought it to my attention...

I will avoid a long testimony...I did share it in the past..but NO..I have been married to my current husband 25 years and my first was 17. It is this truth that I adhere to so strongly that God taught me AFTER my divorce...in my living room floor God humbled me and taught me these truths...
