Good question. I found this article that details some of the things discussed at the trial:

"...Then, when Castile told him he had a firearm, Yanez reacted within the bounds of his training when he told him not to reach for "it." "It" meaning the gun, Dutton said.

But Castile did not comply and continued going for the handgun later found in his right pocket..."

    From the same article:

"...He went on to say that Yanez used "due caution" to avoid injury to the two passengers in the car — Castile's girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, and her 4-year-old daughter — when he stepped to the left of the vehicle and pointed his gun downward before firing.

Earlier testimony from authorities who processed the scene indicated that one bullet hit an armrest between Castile and Reynolds and that another hit the back seat, about 16 inches from where Reynolds' child was strapped into a car seat."

And therein lies the rub. This is why R828 says put your hands on the wheel and do what you're told to do. Like I said, the cop is already nervous, cautious, etc, and you tell him you have a gun and you appear to keep going for it. He may have just been going for his wallet. But once you've told him you have a gun don't go for anything. Not justifying it, but I can see how it happens. Just do what you're told. So many of these could be avoided if the person had just done what they had been told.

She could have been under the influence of recent heavy marijuana use, according to the autopsy he was which may explain why he didn't think his actions out better:

"The defense also called its own toxicology expert to the stand Thursday to weigh in on the evidence of marijuana use found in Castile's system during his autopsy.

The former forensic scientist for the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension testified that the THC levels were "very high" and that Castile was undoubtedly under the influence of marijuana at the time of the shooting..."

What we have here is "Legalized murder by cop."

The problem is that this is not an isolated incident. Cops frequently make the absurd claim "I was afraid for my life." and use that for justification for shooting an unarmed black man, teenager, child, or the family pet. There have been a flurry of such incidents the last few years.

Last year, in South Carolina, we had a highly publicized event. A cop make a traffic stop, the driver started running away, and the cop shot him seven times in the back, killing him, ... then walked up to him and dropped a stun gun beside him to support his claim that the driver had struggled with him and taken it away from him. The plot was foiled when a black teenager released the video he had recorded from across a fence. This cop is in prison now.

Here is another incident that happened last year in North Carolina ....

The Web site http://photographyisnotacrime.com/ documents multiple accounts of cops who do not know the law and/or abuse their authority.
