The AoG, and Pentecostal Holines in my part of the country have not been like the old time Pentecostals for a long time, as far as legalistic appearance standards. The Church of the Nazarene is not as much into appearance either. C of N is still considered non-pentecostal, however they are very much a part of the Wesleyan Holiness teaching. I'm pretty sure none of the ones I've listed promote the use of tobacco or alcohol.

The only churches I know of that still adhere to strong appearance standards are the Oneness Pentecostals and the Indy Baptists.

I'm pretty sure most of the pentecostal denominations don't embrace (I could be wrong) the five -fold ministries as some of the Charismatics do.

During the Charismatic Renewal since people of varied denominations were becoming Spirit filled, they brought in their more liberal standards so it was a totally different group. I'm not saying legalism is good. Truly born again, Spirit filled believers are just that, but pentecostals and charismatics generally come from totally different backgrounds.

    I have no such division.

We got saved and filled with the Holy Spirit while in a mainline denomination that was being swept through during the 70s and 80s with the Charismatic Movement, or Charismatic Renewal... The minister we got saved under (born again and Spirit filled) moved on and another minister came who didn't deny the CM but didn't move any gifts, either... not really sure now if he was even Spirit filled, but definitely saved.

We then moved (6yrs later when God gave us permission) to a Pentecostal church, where we still are today 24 yrs later.

So can someone clear up for me the difference between Charismatic and Pentecostal?

And even why you're so definitive between the two.

I believe the charismatic movement by Holy Spirit wiped away some of that by blending and calling forth from ALL denominations of the world...

The DIFFERENCE I would say lies in legalistic rigidity to an ourtward demonstration of holiness that may or may not be inspired by the Holy Spirit and flipping that coin over it is revealed by the Charismatic's resistance to anything structured or 'organized'.

Now in between those two extremes are those that are just in love with Jesus and follow the Holy Spirit..they conform to holiness where He leads and they release that rigidity to organizational mandates like the more sever dress codes..

We are friends with some old time Pentecostals who don't have any problem with us worshiping with them with me in my pants and my husband and his long hair...now I suspect some in that group DO but are guarded in saying so because of the Pastor's lead...they probably see us as just 'immature'. :)
But others see that Christ in us does not seem to be bothered with our dress and hair. :)

I view the Charismatic movement as the wind of the Spirit blowing across the landscape blending the body of Christ and sweeping away an ESSENTIAL point of division.

When Peter was sent to Cornelius house he was swept to a 'new place' of truth by Holy Spirit. Then when he was called to Jerusalem to give an accounting for his actions the 'truth' swept over them as well bring unity and expanding the vision of the whole body of Christ.

Many did, as Cardinal stated, retain their organizational title and even some of their fundamental beliefs that can still be viewed as divisive but the HOLY Spirit brought the body of Christ to a sense of unity and family..

They were BOTH movements of the Holy Spirit advancing the Body of Christ in a global way...the denominational stuff that still separates are probably actually non-essentials..

One way of seeing it is that the Pentecostal movement started out with formalizing outwardly standards of that time (100 years ago) and by now they have kept many of those standards often while ceasing to preach much on the power and gifts of the Holy Spirit which is now found mostly just in the statements of faith. This is the worst case scenario but some Pentecostals are very much like that, they keep a rigid structure but the original life has departed.

Many Charismatics (anyone who doesn't call themselves Pentecostals) have and preach the power and gifts of the Holy Spirit but there isn't much rigidity and adhering to outward standards of today is more problematic than it was 100 years ago.

As Quest points out, we need to incorporate the best of both worlds. Some of the outwardly stuff worked well 100 years ago. Dress codes for instance. The uniforms of the Salvation Army, which are even older, were the latest fashion back when they were created. Keeping with the same dress code today reflects something completely different than it did back then.

    1. When a congregation is instructed to ‘do as I say’ they tend to put on the masks because the heart has not yet been transformed by the renewed mind.

    2. When they are instructed on learning how to hear and discern the Holy Spirit leading and follow HIM they may not conform at all to those around them.

    3. When they are instructed to do # 2 while aligning also with #1 as imitators they are probably closest to the NT church. IMHO

Being an appointed position, the elders were dissolved when the new pastor came and he began to appoint new ones as he got to know people... Unfortunately, we had to let him go as we found out he had had a moral failure before he came to us and had not gone through proper restoration. (There's much more to the story, but not going to go into it right now.)

People are allowed to wear very casual clothes in most PAOC churches, although on the East Coast, I've heard they're a lot more staunch and straight laced, but not to where women have to wear dresses, etc.

I know that after experiencing the Charismatic Renewal meetings, I was very disappointed at the Pentecostals... they had no fire!!!
Lots of variables and reasons for this one. First, it depends on the region and the leadership. I've gone to some Pentecostal churches that were so dry it was nothing more than baptist people who spoke in tongues quietly (for lack of a better description). Others are still quite wild, crazy etc etc.

First, a lot of AoG and many other PCs were adversely effected by the Latter rain movement. It caused a huge shake down, many splits, fallouts, after which many Pentecostal churches dried up and shied away from all demonstration of the spirit.

The other big shake down that many here may not be aware of was the William Branham movement. He was mightily used of God, a great prophet, etc but his teachings tore up many churches and his followers split off churches and started their own sect. He taught the doctrine of serpent seed and that because of Eve and what happened in the garden, that women were to be very subservient to men

Church of God in Christ, Pentecostal Assemblies and many others still do not permit their women to wear pants to church. In some more traditional churches, the women would be asked to tone down their makeup on the platform and show no cleavage.

I attended the COGIC convocation a few years back in St Louis and saw many very traditional holiness women. I believe most of them are from the bible belt south.

Charismatics wave banners and dance around the platform like they are wild people.

    Pentecostals are of God!

And that's the difference and that's the truth.
