    Charismatic vs Pentecostal

Some of you seem to have a very clear dividing line between Charismatics and Pentecostals.

    I have no such division.

We got saved and filled with the Holy Spirit while in a mainline denomination that was being swept through during the 70s and 80s with the Charismatic Movement, or Charismatic Renewal... The minister we got saved under (born again and Spirit filled) moved on and another minister came who didn't deny the CM but didn't move any gifts, either... not really sure now if he was even Spirit filled, but definitely saved.

We then moved (6yrs later when God gave us permission) to a Pentecostal church, where we still are today 24 yrs later.

So can someone clear up for me the difference between Charismatic and Pentecostal?

And even why you're so definitive between the two.

I tend to agree with you....not a lot of difference in terms of beliefs. What I think people are talking about is the "old timey Pentecostal" beliefs, versus the Charismatic Renewel, which technically started in the late 60s and consumed pretty much all denominations.

Pentecostal: Stricter dress codes, strict interpretation of marriage/divorce/remarriage

Charismatic: Not so strict on the dress codes, not as harsh or strict on certain issues

Pentecostals go back to 1901 and denominations were formed who received the baptism of the Holy Spirit
Charismatics go back to the 1960-1980 era which saw mainline denominations get filled with the HS

In the last 30 years there has been alot of intermingling and mixing. If a church retains its mainline denominational name they are more likely to want to be called Charismatics
Example is Baptist - most don't want to be called pentes but Spirit filled Baptists or charismatic Baptists

These days we don't have to be as rigid but some mainline groups prefer charismatic to pentecostal

In this part of the country, many Pentecostal churches forbid makeup, cutting hair, jewelry and slacks for the ladies and the skirts must be below the knees. In other words, they are very legalistic. Not all of them are like that, of course, but many are. I don't think there is a lot of difference in terms of doctrine.

    AJ,

As you know, the Pentecostals came from the Azusa street revival. These people were Weslyan Holiness people (strict Methodist) who retained all the strict rules while embracing the Baptism of the holy spirit. All of the major Pentecostal denominations including AoG, maintained the Weslyan holiness rules for several decades. Most have eased up on the rules over the last 20-40 years. A smaller minority have maintained some of the dress codes and prohibit such things as drinking alcohol, smoking, fowl language etc etc

There are actually small sects of Baptist (like the Duggars), Nazarenes, off shoots of AoG and COG and many others who still uphold the above mentioned rules.
I have even run across some of the original Weslyan holiness methodist. of course they are a small minority.

The general mindset of traditional Pentecostals about Charismatics use to be that they have no boundaries at all, mostly into prosperity gospel and look something like Tammy Faye, Jan Crouch and those of the TBN variety. I don't hear that sort of stereotyping as much as use to anymore

There is definitely a difference. I can't quite define it, but I know it when I see it. :)

My parents came into Pentecost in the 1940s as young people under some of the original saints from Azusa in Los Angeles. Their pastor was older even back then. I think he may have gotten spirit filled in 1919? (in LA) right after the revival. My BILs grandmother was saved at Azusa etc. I can go on.. but suffice to say, I understand their mentality. My mother maintained the holiness rules to her death as do some of my older relatives
    Thank you....

I've attended a PAOC church for 24 yrs and while they discourage drinking, when we were asked to be elders in our church, when we told the pastor we sometimes will have a drink, that didn't disqualify us, we went on to be elders until he resigned. Being an appointed position, the elders were dissolved when the new pastor came and he began to appoint new ones as he got to know people... Unfortunately, we had to let him go as we found out he had had a moral failure before he came to us and had not gone through proper restoration. (There's much more to the story, but not going to go into it right now.)

People are allowed to wear very casual clothes in most PAOC churches, although on the East Coast, I've heard they're a lot more staunch and straight laced, but not to where women have to wear dresses, etc.

I know that after experiencing the Charismatic Renewal meetings, I was very disappointed at the Pentecostals... they had no fire!!!
