    Does Canada accept "medical refugees"??

All joking aside, Americans are increasingly engaging in "medical tourism" in order to obtain less costly care:

In First World countries, like the United States, medical tourism has large growth prospects and potentially destabilizing implications. A forecast by Deloitte Consulting published in August 2008 projected that medical tourism originating in the US could jump by a factor of ten over the next decade. An estimated 750,000 Americans went abroad for health care in 2007, and the report estimated that 1.5 million would seek health care outside the US in 2008. The growth in medical tourism has the potential to cost US health care providers billions of dollars in lost revenue. -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medical_tourism

I know that long waiting lists for certain services cause Canadians to seek care elsewhere... but essential services and emergency care are always done first. My nephew was misdiagnosed with a torn tendon but when the MRI was done and the problem found, the surgery was done immediately, lest the damage increase due to muscle shrinkage. This was just last week. But the whole thing was covered.

    Every system has its challenges.

Our current premiums are about $1000 a month with Cobra. Too bad I can't stay on it indefinitely. DH earns too much so a subsidy will never happen. You would think that I wouldn't complain about the premiums, but logically it just does not make sense to pay that much money for a service that we use a few times a year for annual physical and for odd other complaints. I guess a person needs it in case something catastrophic happens. Three years ago when DH got rear ended (he was stopped and the guy was going 70!!), there were multiple MRIs, X-rays, multiple doctors, and physical therapy, etc., etc. He's still not 100%, but at least he's not walking crookedly any more. If something like that happened to either of us, we could probably eat through any deductible pretty quickly.

I don't know what the solution is - but this is not what was promised by any stretch of the imagination.
If you go to the doctor only for annual physicals and the occasional minor complaint, you might as well take the "bronze" plans (after your Cobra expires). These plans have the lowest premiums but the highest deductibles. They'll insure you against major catastrophic illnesses. But keep in mind that you never know when a serious illness will strike. A youngish co-worker had been on the very-high-deductible plan when he had a serious but unexpected illness, and he had to pay a huge amount for his treatment.

Unfortunately, losing employer-subsidized health insurance can be quite a shock; not only have you lost your job and the associated income, your health insurance premium costs have tripled. (My employer covers 2/3 of the premiums.) It's kind of a "double whammy."

Canada, or at least Ontario's health care has its own set of problems. My adult children still live there, so I'm aware of the challenges. When a people have no concept of the cost of health care as in Ontario (Canada) there is abuse. However, I doubt Canada is an option for us. DH still needs to work and wants to work at least another 10 years here.

NJTOM, this is our main concern regarding a bronze plan. There are catastrophic things which occur that cannot be predicted. At least with a $12,000 deductible, we would know where the limit was, however that has us paying for all other services, which upsets me a bit. So, we will stay on Cobra for as long as possible and continue to research and pray about the options available to us.

Trust me, the allure is there, as are my children and maybe one day my grandchildren. I also think Ontario is one of the most beautiful places on earth.

So glad that I have medicare. It would be way beyond my ability to pay for anything close to that, even with subsidy. My son is getting insurance thru the company he works for now. Otherwise he was just paying the penalty.
