I don't believe it's candid...they are expressing anger or at least some of them are...there is a far different countenance when someone is just posing....the eyes on some, especially three in the front...but it is possible those three are affecting the rest as some of them do not seem hostile..just indifferent...I think the red head in the center front sets the perception for the whole group...she looks really angry..
Some of them might be aware of being photographed, which is different to being told to pose for a photo.

Thank you... I suppose I believe they did KNOW they were being photographed as I am sure cameras were snapping all around at the event....these events are very orchestrated so I do not believe they were unaware....does that still fit candid?

Well it means that the photo showed their true feelings. It was a 'candid' shot as opposed to set up.

That's not a wideangle shot and the photographer is probably standing much further away than it looks like. They may still be aware of him.
