Lightbulb Tiny House Nation (on the FYI Network)

Don't know if I mentioned this before, but I'm fascinated with this show - It's very interesting to see how people "pare down" and adjust to "living tiny."

I can see the concept being fun for a young, married couple just starting out, or even a single person, but some of the episodes feature couples with 2 kids and in some cases, 2 kids and 2 pets!!! Whoa, that's waaaaaay too many creatures cramped up in very small living quarters.

Most of the houses are really, really cute, but I have some "claustrophobic" tendencies and I don't know if Hubby and I could live in 200 square feet comfortably...

Heck, I need that much room for my shoes and purses!!!

Oh, and most of the commodes are "composting toilets" that need to be emptied every few days - YUCK - Call me "spoiled," but NO thank you!

I have fallen out of bed a time or two so I could never sleep in an open loft. Also, I do not climb ladders!

We discovered the tiny house concept about 4 years ago..took us on a journey that landed us buying a park model RV for a fraction of the cost. :)
But it was very challenging and seeing how people do this can be rewarding..it challenges our materialistic mindset about what we REALLY need. Do I nee China for 16? How often would I actually use it? Do I need a linen closet full of towels and spare sheets? Do I really need all those pots and pans?

Do I really need all those 'spare bedrooms' and do I really need that formal dining room?

We started with the rooms and started getting rid of furniture ..we eventually realized we had downsized from a 11 room house to 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, an eat in kitchen and a living room...We knew then we were ready to sell the house and move into an RV...it took about 3 years to get the mindset but it's so much simpler life...and we are free financially and have so little yard and house work our weekends are now free for family and friends...

Curly Sue..it was the 'loft concept' that caused us to exit some of our ideas like taking a large storage barn and converting it..really cool layouts for those too but if you were going to put it on wheels you need to be aware of the road restrictions...

Quite a few people realized The American dream was not all it was cracked up to be after the crash in '08..it's in large part, vanity...who made the rule that if you didn't have a 3 Bedroom house with 2 baths and two car garage you were 'poor' and unsuccessful!!! It's literally a marketing lie..

I know a family right now that is in trouble with the Dept. of family and children's services because they don't have a 'bedroom' for each of their kids.

    Ok..stepping off my soapbox..

It's funny..a friend of mine watched us go through this journey and now she has started on one of her own..she started the same way we did..she got the idea..started researching before even her husband is on board...Although I will say mine got on board pretty quick..hers is really dragging his feet! :)

The journey starts in the head, and in our case, I believe from the Spirit.

We have a pretty simple life style. "Stuff" is just suffocating to me.

Typically, the stuff ends up owning you.

Yes, our pastor said his house wakes him up barking orders every day...it does begin to own us..and literally gets in the way of our service to the Lord..

I totally agree - We pared down a lot when we moved into our Townhouse almost 3 years ago, but we still have 3 bedrooms and 2 1/5 baths.

I'd be quite comfortable with 2 bedrooms and 2 baths, but Hubby thinks we need extra space for "visiting relatives and for entertaining," which only happens about TWICE a year.

We figured out it was cheaper to have that big Christmas family get together out doing something together fun and then going to a nice buffet restaurant and letting them do all the cooking, serving and cleaning..
