Thread: Did you have neighborhood peddlers?

    Did you have neighborhood peddlers?

When I was a kid we had all sorts of neighborhood peddlers, some sold fruit, others veggies. A guy would come thru on occasion to sharpen knives and we even had a junkman ringing a bell to buy old mattresses and such.

An area facebook group I'm on recently posted some old pics of them.

    A produce peddler...

We didn't have them growing up. But, in Redford (more suburban/urban than where I live now), there were regular people who scouted the streets for people's cast offs.

We put an old tube type TV out on the lawn and it was gone in minutes. Same with anything metallic thing.

    Scavengers, not peddlers.

We had a junk store near our elementary school. I went in on occasion and marvelled that someone would even think of selling all that old stuff. And look at us now. I dream of a day I could revisit that place.

Never seen any thing like that growing up. But a guy had a store down the road that always had them things, garden season had all kind of plants & yard plants. Even sold beef calves to raise. Abby's Fruit Market.

My Mom graduated school at Dowagiac after they moved from St. James Arkansas. Got many relatives there still. But she would load all us kids up (5) in the Chevy Station Wagon and takes up around Dowagiac during the seasons fruits & vegetable stuff was being picked. We always got enough potatoes then stored them in the basement and they would last until the next season.

But strawberry season we packed the Station Wagon with them and would set up a stand along the highway we lived on and sell quarts of them. We always had a very big garden and we did the same thing selling vegetables.

We had the Fuller Brush Man come to our neighborhood. Mom bought stuff from him from time to time. I still have and use two of their vegetable brushes!

Oh yes, there was the Howdy Doody ice cream man who came around. He came in a tiny little car that was painted zinc chromate green. I would get in a panic trying to get a dime before he passed our house.
