Quest to change Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day sails ahead

    Story highlights
    • At least 14 communities in the US have passed measures designating Indigenous Peoples Day
    • Support is far from universal -- leaders in Oklahoma City and Cincinnati rejected proposals

(CNN)The state of Vermont and the cities of Denver and Phoenix joined the growing list of places celebrating Native Americans on the federal holiday named for Christopher Columbus.

Since Columbus Day 2015 at least 14 communities in the United States have passed measures designating the second Monday in October Indigenous Peoples Day.

The changes build on recent efforts to shift the day's focus from the Italian explorer, beginning in big cities including Seattle, Minneapolis and Albuquerque, and spreading to counties and school districts.

"Indigenous Peoples Day represents a shift in consciousness," said Dr. Leo Killsback, a citizen of the Northern Cheyenne Nation and assistant professor of American Indian Studies at Arizona State University.

"It acknowledges that indigenous peoples and their voices are important in today's conversations..."

There have been people protesting Columbus Day in Denver for quite a number of years now.

They can really get upset and angry about it.

More emphasis on just how terrible and offensive America's very existence is to their "progressive" mindset.

The only thing the city leaders of OKC have on their minds is the revitalization of "Brick Town" and the downtown area in general. Brick Town has become nothing but a bunch of bars and it isn't safe to go there after dark. If it doesn't add another venue to downtown, forget it.

The annual event "Red Earth" has been moved from the downtown arena to the horse racing track.

This is an excerpt from A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies, written by Bartoleme de Las Casas in 1542. Mr. de Las Casas was a Spanish historian who arrived with the European settlers in the Americas and witnessed the atrocities committed against the Native Americans.

Their reason for killing and destroying such an infinite number of souls is that the Christians have an ultimate aim, which is to acquire gold, and to swell themselves with riches in a very brief time and thus rise to a high estate disproportionate to their merits. It should be kept in mind that their insatiable greed and ambition, the greatest ever seen in the world, is the cause of their villainies. And also, those lands are so rich and felicitous, the native peoples so meek and patient, so easy to subject, that our Spaniards have no more consideration for them than beasts. And I say this from my own knowledge of the acts I witnessed. But I should not say "than beasts" for, thanks be to God, they have treated beasts with some respect; I should say instead like excrement on the public squares. And thus they have deprived the Indians of their lives and souls, for the millions I mentioned have died without the Faith and without the benefit of the sacraments. This is a wellknown and proven fact which even the tyrant Governors, themselves killers, know and admit. And never have the Indians in all the Indies committed any act against the Spanish Christians, until those Christians have first and many times committed countless cruel aggressions against them or against neighboring nations. For in the beginning the Indians regarded the Spaniards as angels from Heaven. Only after the Spaniards had used violence against them, killing, robbing, torturing, did the Indians ever rise up against them....

From everything I've read of Colunbus, he was a man with flaws but who loved God and wanted to take Christianity to the world. In many of his writings, he speaks with much reverence and great love for our Creator, crediting Him as the One leading & guiding him on his voyages. I will always recognize Columbus Day whether the state does or not.

"'Of this voyage, I observe,' says the Admiral, 'that it has miraculously been shown, as may be understood by this writing, by the many signal miracles that He has shown on the voyage, and for me, who for so great a time was in the court of Your Highnesses with the opposition and against the opinion of so many high personages of your household, who were all against me, alleging this undertaking to be folly, which I hope in Our Lord will be to the greater glory of Christianity, which to some slight extent already has happened.'" ~Christopher Columbus

If the Left despises something, it's probably from God.
