That's an answer completely devoid of any content. It doesn't really matter though, it is still nothing more than favoritism.
If God had "zapped" Paul then told him that he should just cruise through life and do nothing then that would be favoritism. That is not what happened, God called Paul to be an instrument of the salvation of a multitude of others. That isn't favoritism, that is a heart for the lost.

The context is that God has plans and a purpose for doing things. I don't know the details but it involved you and I and VW and Bookie and TT and Femme* etc. (I've called a number of tradesmen in the last few days to fulfil my plans and purposes. You and I etc are fulfilling God's).

Yep, as Paul wrote to Timothy, that God "saved (him) and called (him) with a holy calling, not according to (his own) works, but according to His (God's) own purpose and grace" and to the Ephesians he said this was "for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that (I Paul) would walk in them." (note prepared BEFOREHAND)
And for better or worse (worse maybe?) as soon as He saved him God let Paul know what he was in for "Go, for (Paul) is a chosen instrument of Mine, to bear My name before the Gentiles and kings and the sons of Israel; for I will show him how much he must suffer for My name’s sake." (Acts 9).
You say "God called Paul to be an instrument"; God says Paul "is a chosen instrument of Mine". "called to be <something>" and "is a chosen <something>" are way different IMO.
