For an independent to win the general voting population has to have a large degree of confidence that he could possibly win, whether they are thinking about voting for him or not. It's a bit like the stock market, volatile. It seems to me that it would be very difficult to create that kind of confidence in the US but maybe Ross Perot could have kept it up. Things tend to stabilize themselves back towards boring when election day arrives, I think that is the case everywhere. So it would take a lot of momentum.
