    Does love trump doctine?

I'm bringing over a subject from our FB page. This is the opening post:

" PHILEMON 1:8&9 " THEREFORE, THOUGH I MIGHT BE VERY BOLD IN CHRIST TO COMMAND YOU, WHAT IS FITTING, YET FOR LOVE'S SAKE, I RATHER APPEAL TO YOU- BEING SUCH A O...NE AS PAUL, THE AGED, AND NOW ALSO A PRISONER OF JESUS CHRIST

PAUL'S HUMILITY, IN THIS SCRIPTURE, IS VITAL FOR OUR TEACHER'S AND MINISTER'S TODAY..PAUL DECLARES; EVEN THOUGH I AM KNOWN TO BE VERY BOLD AND COMMANDING IN WHAT IS FITTING....LISTEN UP TO WHAT PAUL GOES ON TO SAY....FOR LOVE'S SAKE.....GOD DEEMS LOVE MORE IMPORTANT THEN DOCTRINE AND TRADITIONS OF MEN...PAUL WITHDREW HIS COMMITMENT TO DOCTRINE, RECOGNIZING HE WAS A PRISONER OF JESUS CHRIST...
LET US NOT FORGET...WE ARE THE LIVING WORD OF GOD, IT IS SOMETIMES EASY TO GET CAUGHT UP IN DOCTRINE AND TRADITIONS, FORGETTING, WE ARE PRISONERS OF THE LIVING CHRIST....HAVE A BLESSED DAY!!

I'm not sure what Trump's doctrine is.

Another member gave an excellent reply:

This is Pauls greatest discourse on love in all his writings:

"Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity (love), I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity (love), I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity (love), it profiteth me nothing. Charity (love) suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. And now abideth faith, hope, charity (love), these three; but the greatest of these is charity (LOVE)." 1Corinthians 13:1-13.

Notice Paul says that it doesn't matter how much he knew or what he did for God even to the point of giving his body to be burned, if doesn't have love, it's worth nothing! He said if he spoke with tongues of men and angels without love it's just a bunch of noise!

I want to point out something else in this chapter of love: notice in verse 6 , love "rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the TRUTH;" so we see here that LOVE LOVES TRUTH, or love rejoiceth in truth. So then LOVE will NEVER abandon the truth right? Right! The truth of Gods Word is SOUND DOCTRINE (TRUTH) His Word is Truth. "Sanctify them through Thy Truth: Thy Word is Truth." John17:17 Jesus praying to the Father for His disciples and those would later believe through their word.

Here in another place Paul makes mention of (sound, true teaching according to the teachings of Christ and the apostles) DOCTRINE.....

"Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the DOCTRINE which Ye have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple." (Romans 16:17-18) In regards to teachers and preachers: listen to them until they begin teaching something that does not line up with the written Word of God (Truth) LOVE Loves truth remember?

Now a days the church of the Living God is being bombarded by limp wrested "teachers" that are ignorant of the Truth of Gods Word. They are always in search of a "new revelation" and it doesn't matter if it lines up with the Word of God or not!!! I'm sick to death with this attack by the enemy on the infallible word of God!

This is how the serpent beguiled Eve!!! "And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?" Gen.3:1 the devil is still today trying to get people to doubt the Word of God!!!

Paul again: "If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the Words of faith and of GOOD DOCTRINE, whereunto thou hast attained. But refuse profane and old wives fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness." (1Tim.4:6-7)

"I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom; preach the Word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and DOCTRINE. FOR THE TIME WILL COME WHEN THEY WILL NOT ENDURE SOUND DOCTRINE; but after their own lust shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the TRUTH (remember, LOVE rejoiceth in the TRUTH) , and shall be turned unto fables. (2Tim.4:1-4)

You are saying in this post: "God deems love more important then doctrine........" Where does the Word say this?

I've given scripture to support Love and its importance, however Love rejoiceth in the Truth, the Word of God is Truth. And in this post you are linking Doctrine with the traditions of men. I guess you could link false doctrine with the traditions of men, but we can NEVER link SOUND DOCTRINE with the traditions of men.

Paul did not once withdraw his commitment to doctrine in this passage.

He is writing from prison to a slave owner named Philemon who lived in Colosse. Paul wrote Philemon to deal with the specific issue of his runaway slave, Onesimus. According to Roman law, a runaway slave could be punished by death. Paul pleads on Onesimus' behalf and asks Philemon to graciously receive his servant back as a fellow Christian and as Pauls companion. He asks Philemon to treat Onesimus with the same love and compassion he would show to Paul himself.

Paul led Onesimus to the Lord, verse 10 ".....whom I have begotten in my bonds:" what an awesome joy it must have been to Paul to have this honor to have such an impact on Onesimus and Philemons life!!!

People couldn't care any less about how much we know until they know how much we care. Trust me friend, I am not trying to be contentious, I genuinely care and I see you have a desire to teach others, but I want to exhort you to study to show yourself approved unto God, pray and search the scriptures diligently and pray before you teach make sure what you are teaching is SOUND DOCTRINE.

There is nothing about skipping doctrine in Philemon, the matter discussed has nothing to do with doctrine. Could as well invent something about which brands of coffee not to drink on the same basis.

Good point made by poster...love loves truth, love speaks truth, therefore love must know and agree with truth...It is also written, 'My Word is truth'.

Love does not trump doctrine if doctrine is interpreted to be the Word of God...
