TV Host, Former Miss Alabama Calls Dallas Cop Killer a 'Martyr'

A woman who became the first black Miss Alabama triggered a fierce backlash by expressing mixed emotions about the attack that killed five police officers in Dallas.

Kalyn Chapman James, who was crowned Miss Alabama in 1993, recorded an emotional video message (above) Sunday morning after leaving church, calling the attacker a "martyr."

In the status message, James, a model and Miami TV host, wrote: "I don't want to feel this way..."

James said she was wrestling with feelings of guilt for viewing the shooter, Micah Johnson, as a "martyr."

Police said Johnson opened fire on officers Thursday night because he was upset over police shootings of black men and was trying to kill as many white cops as he could.

"I don't feel sad for the officers that lost their lives and I know that that's really not my heart. I value — I value human life. And I want to feel sad for them, but I can't help but feeling like the shooter was a martyr, and I know it's not the right way to feel because nobody deserves to lose their lives," she said, recognizing that the officers had families and "didn't deserve to die."

James emphasized that she does not condone violence against innocent people and asked others to share their opinions.

"I'm sick of this and something has to be done, period. I don't know what else to say. It's a lot to deal with and I know I'm not the only one feeling this way," she said through tears.

Wonder if she'll lose her job like the white cop did speaking out against BLM.

Obviously this situation has served to reveal what IS in her own heart...I pray she comes to realize this is conviction and she needs to repent and let God transform her. Often our response is revealing sin in us and rther than repent and seek transformation we try to hide it or even worse justify it.

The irony is that the Dallas Police have put a lot of policies in place to strengthen their relationship with the community. These aren't the "bad cops" Sad that she doesn't see that.

I'm not an advocate of folks losing their job because of what they say when not on the job. Too much of that happening these days. This is America and we shouldn't be penalized for having unpopular opinions.

I agree. I was just comparing it to the policeman who did get fired. My post was intended to highlight the hypocrisy.

    Yes, I know.

I was thinking of all of the folks that lost their jobs for voicing a different opinion (some were even racist or just plain stupid). Taking away a person's livelihood for their way of thinking is wrong.

I was thinking of the men, one owned a basketball team, and the other was a top executive at Mozilla Firefox, don't recall their names, who were forced to give up their positions because of their opinions. Hate what the basketball team owner said (he was secretly recorded by his mistress), but he was in his own home and had the right to expect privacy.

I agree. Not just liberals should be able to voice their opinion and not fear for recourse. The 'scary' thing is, a certain way of thinking has become the norm, and any other opinion opposite of that is sought to be controlled through firing, mass social media against them, etc, etc. And not only has that thinking become the norm, 'punishing' contrary thought has become the norm.
